It was clear that Bannister was complicit in the matter. His key, left in the door, precisely at the right time? That was unlikely a coincidence as Gilchrist happening to recognize the proofs through the distorted old glass of Soames’ office.

Yet when caught, each strove to protect the college as well as each other. Loyalty is a strange thing.

It so happened that, in the early spring of '95, Holmes and I found ourselves at University again, where he looked into the matter of some curious discrepancies in early English Charters and I - well; I followed him.

I had not yet become so accustomed to having him back in my life that I would willingly be without him.

“I am not going to play along with this farce, Holmes. You wanted me to try university life, and I did. You’d better warned your brother, because I don’t like it!”
Holmes shrugged, face nonchalant.
“Too bad. Mycroft predicted you would not last a term.”
Watson watched Miss Moriarty’s face intently. He had bet a considerable sum on her doctorate.
