As always, such a poignant clerihew. The excursion to the vicarage of Little Purlington definitely did not make Watson's day. You tell from the story that he tries to remain polite but he is seething between the lines. ;) It is an interesting ploy to make us, the readers, dislike Amberley even more.

Amberley was certainly an unpleasant man. Although I also suspect Watson may have grumbled to Holmes about the journey at a later point as well.
