The Speckled Band: Mysterious Ways

Our journey back to London was spent in silence. I looked at Holmes from under half-closed lids and wondered. He had figured out the case long before our awful vigil the night before, yet told me nothing and put us both in more danger than necessary.
The case was solved, but the man opposite me was a far greater mystery.

...the man opposite me was a far greater mystery. Very true...

Holmes says he has "scruples" about taking Watson with him because of the danger, and yet doesn't feel that he ought to give Watson full information about what is likely to happen.

I wonder how long it took Watson to solve that particular mystery.

Entirely reasonable of Watson to wonder at Holmes' reasoning

Your thoughts seem to run along the same lines as mine, although I believe that Holmes was dangerous to Watson in more ways than one. (But I imagine their friendship was worth it, anyway.)

...the man opposite me was a far greater mystery. Indeed! Holmes seems to reflexively play everything close to the vest, even when it would make more sense to give Watson a tidbit of information now and then. Especially in this case, where it seems irresponsible to the point of callousness not to do so. A mystery indeed!
