Canon Discussion: The Gloria Scott

This week we are reading The Gloria Scott. It carries the theme of being forgotten.

One afternoon Holmes is sorting papers and hands Watson a curious message that killed a judge -- the father of Holmes' only school friend. It's the case that Holmes says made him turn to his current profession.

Holmes inadvertantly made friends with Victor Trevor when Trevor's dog bit Holmes; during Holmes' recovery, Trevor visited him and so a friendship formed. During a school break, Trevor brings Holmes home with him where Trevor Sr. is told about Holmes' ability to deduce a man's current state and some of his past from only a few details. Not only does Holmes impress Trevor Sr. with what he knows, he scares him as well for having seen the tattoo on his arm. From then on, Trevor Sr. is wary of Holmes and what he does and doesn't know.

Luckily for Trevor, Holmes was able to deduce what he could. Some time later, Trevor Sr. was visited by an old sailor who claims to know him and soon makes a ruckus in the household by drinking and behaving badly. Trevor Sr., surprising his son, lets it all happen without a complaint and even seems to be unable to. But the old sailor soon tires of the game and moves on to someone from their shared past. All seems to return to normality, but then Trevor Sr. receives a message and has a stroke. Trevor retrieves Holmes for his help in understanding what happened, but it is too late to help Trevor Sr.

Holmes reads the message and realizes that the message was hidden; it is from the other man in Trevor Sr.'s past, detailing that the sailor knew everything and that they both best fly for their lives. Trevor then brings some papers that his father had left:

Trevor Sr. had committed a crime in his youth for which he was caught -- he claims that he had stolen money to right a wrong by another -- and on board the ship he's brought in on a plot to overthrow the guards and sailors to win their freedom. They almost do -- but some of the remaining sailors and guards still alive make a last stand. Trevor Sr. and another refuse to see more blood shed when the convicts win again and so are cast off. While they are deducing where to go, an explosion happens -- one last sailor had blown up the ship; the sailor who later visited Trevor Sr. in England. Though Trevor Sr. and his friend had changed their names and returned to England with no one knowing them, the sailor found them and threatened to reveal everything.

And so this is the Gloria Scott -- the ship that made three men enemies. It wasn't a case Holmes solved, but was instrumental in introducing him to his career. Thoughts?
