The Second Stain: Trifle

Canon Story: The Second Stain
Title: Trifle
Author: [livejournal.com profile] spacemutineer
Rating: G
Author's Notes: Originates from this dialogue between Lestrade and Holmes:
"We've got it all clear as if we had seen it."
Holmes raised his eyebrows.
"And yet you have sent for me?"
"Ah, yes, that's another matter -- a mere trifle, but the sort of thing you take an interest in -- queer, you know, and what you might call freakish. It has nothing to do with the main fact -- can't have, on the face of it."
"What is it, then?"

"A mere trifle." Hardly.

He realized this anomaly mattered, if not how. Lestrade is a decent bloodhound; he often can scent a clue's importance even if he lacks the acuity to discern what that importance may be.

The Inspector knew the second stain raised a pointed but unknown question, and he knew enough to summon me to provide the answer.

Héhé, cleverly put! Who knows, it might be Lestrade's way of keeping his face up though he knows, deep down inside, that he's got it all wrong again.

I always smile when I think of Lestrade saying "freakish" as well. As you've so aptly expressed here, it is the trifles that often are the key to unlocking the mystery. Thanks for sharing this 'trifle' !

Mission accomplished here. A nice tribute to the much under appreciated inspector :-)

I'm on the hunt for Lestrade moments, so thanks for pinpointing him here. Holmes seeing him as a bloodhound of sorts is terribly interesting.

I'm not technically working on it yet. I need to get more familiar with ACD, which is dovetailing nicely with doing these 60s and refreshing my memory of canon. The mad theory is that BBC Lestrade somehow gets time and universe travelled into the body of his counterpart in ACD Holmes. I imagine it as a case fic with bookend head injuries for poor Lestrade.

I also need to finish one large project before I can start another which is more significant than a drabble. If I allow that I'll be lost.

I'm flattered by your interest! It definitely helps spur me on to get writing and on with the show.

Absolutely!

Lestrade deserves some credit for his part in the case:-)

A lovely look at the relationship between Holmes and Lestrade - they do see the value in each other. The best of the Yarders, indeed :)
