The Noble Bachelor: Sympathy and The Second Stain: The Obvious Question

Argh, one late and one in under the wire. RL has been kicking my butt lately. I apologize for my lack of commenting and lateness of response. I promise I'll get better someday.

A/N: I was struck by Watson saying, in the beginning, that this was a few weeks prior to his own wedding, and wondered how that might affect his opinion of the case.

Holmes’ words set a fire loose in my brain. I saw our noble bachelor through a different lens. I had not considered the case in the light of my own impending nuptials. Now I found the thought of losing a wife, after all I had gone through to win her, harrowing. I prayed I would not have the same experience.

“Holmes, I don’t understand. Why did the Secretary not simply destroy the letter? What purpose could there be in keeping it?”

“Why, the purpose was the same as for Lucas, of course: blackmail.”

“I cannot believe… the British government would not….”

“Ah, Watson, you are as straight and clean as the blade of a sword. Never be less, my friend.”
