Argh, one late and one in under the wire. RL has been kicking my butt lately. I apologize for my lack of commenting and lateness of response. I promise I'll get better someday.

A/N: I was struck by Watson saying, in the beginning, that this was a few weeks prior to his own wedding, and wondered how that might affect his opinion of the case.

Holmes’ words set a fire loose in my brain. I saw our noble bachelor through a different lens. I had not considered the case in the light of my own impending nuptials. Now I found the thought of losing a wife, after all I had gone through to win her, harrowing. I prayed I would not have the same experience.

“Holmes, I don’t understand. Why did the Secretary not simply destroy the letter? What purpose could there be in keeping it?”

“Why, the purpose was the same as for Lucas, of course: blackmail.”

“I cannot believe… the British government would not….”

“Ah, Watson, you are as straight and clean as the blade of a sword. Never be less, my friend.”

Great last line in the SECO story here! Can totally hear Holmes saying such to his friend, Watson. Great work!

Although I do recall a line in REIG where it makes one wonder how innocent Watson might be :-)

"A little diplomacy was needed, but when Holmes understood that the establishment was a bachelor one, and that he would be allowed the fullest freedom, he fell in with my plans"

At least he had the detective's best interests in mind!

as straight and clean as the blade of a sword

Mmm, gorgeous simile. It's elegant and so apt.

Good job with both. It may not be much of a consolation but I'm in the same boat as you and had to double-up to keep up.

I particularly like the naive Watson, good soldier that he is, unaware of the utility of the letter to the British government. Wonderful!

You have nicely summed up the reason for the letter's continued existence.
