Canon Story: The Dying Detective
Title: Veiled
Author: Mafief
Rating: G
Warnings: none
Author’s Notes: In the US, PBS Masterpiece Mystery has red letters in their credits that spell out a word that relates to that episode. If I did it right, the bolded letters should be in order and another five-word story should be revealed.

I should remark on the qualities that make Watson an ideal helpmate. Along with his many, albeit understated, virtues are his loyalty and willingness to accept my commands, no matter how insane they appear, and obey completely. If his instincts are agitated and he declines, it is fortunate I know him well and can coax acceptance with an alternative strategy.

“Coals of fire, Holmes – coals of…” Culverton Smith paused. “Did your bedstead thump?”

“Oysters!” the malingerer gasped, and flung up his hand as if in delirium to strike the headboard.

"It was really your fault, Holmes,” Watson insisted, rumpled and unrepentant.

Lestrade, equally rumpled, nodded. “If you will have both the Doctor and myself confined in the same small space…”

This Sunday, October 29th, we'll be reading The Adventure of the Dying Detective.

Watson, you must come! Holmes is gravely ill!

If you're new to our community, don't be shy! We read each of the 60 ACD canon stories in a little over a year. Some of the stories are split up given their length. You can have a look at our profile page for the schedule. Each week, the story's discussion begins on Sunday and remains open all week. You can join in with the discussion or write a short 60 word story based on the week's case or just read along with us. Or all three! And you can join us here or on our sister community on livejournal, sherlock60.livejournal.com

We look forward to seeing everyone this coming Sunday.

Next time I hear Holmes is dying I shall not be rushing to his aid.  The only exception will be if Mrs Hudson sends word his imminent death is due to her hitting him with her frying pan, in which case I shall assist her with the disposal of the body.  Supper at Simpson’s is not sufficient recompense for this.

Author's Notes: “There are my prisons," he continued, pointing to a row of bottles and jars which stood upon a side table. "Among those gelatine cultivations some of the very worst offenders in the world are now doing time." ...the pictures of celebrated criminals with which every wall was adorned. “...for me the microbe… for him the villain…”

Culverton Smith was poking around the attic. “So where will I sleep?”

Holmes laughed. “You’re not staying.”

He escorted Smith down the stairs and—

Holmes opened his eyes.

Picking up Smith’s police photograph, he hung it carefully on the wall.

“There!”

He smiled at all the villains in their pictorial prisons.

“Must keep my mind tidy for the next case.”

Welcome once again to my poetry page!

I hope each week you will read Dr. Watson’s delightful narrative (though not quite so delightful this week) and then go on to write a poem related to it in some way. All forms of poetry are permitted, and further down the page there is a selection you might like to consider using over the coming weeks.

And here, courtesy of my housemaid Rachel, are this week’s suggested poems to read—suggestions inspired by the themes and subjects in this week's story. Hopefully you will enjoy the poems, and perhaps they may give you some ideas for a poem of your own or allow you to look at Dr. Watson's story in a new way.

An Ancient Gesture

by Edna St. Vincent Millay

Note from Rachel: This poem expresses, for me, some of Mrs. Hudson’s experience (and by extension, Dr. Watson’s), in learning that the hero’s suffering was feigned while their own was all too real.

A Fixed Idea

by Amy Lowell

Note from Rachel: Mr. Holmes seems determined to catch his villains at any cost, and almost eager to cut the tie of friendship that holds him back from total immersion into combat with these devils. Of late he has been melancholy, too -- missing the days when he shared these rooms with the good doctor, I do believe. His friend's brief visits and occasional shared cases only make the solitude worse to return to once they are over. He speaks more and more of a name, one particular enemy; he calls him the Napoleon of Crime. Mrs. Hudson and I worry for him, terribly. One cannot help but wonder what strange thoughts are in his heart.

Thank you so much to Rachel. (Yes, these are anxious times at Baker Street...) And here is my suggested form to revisit this week: the epulaeryu. (The link takes you back to a previous poetry page.)

But you do not have to use that form. Any form of poetry is welcome this week—and every week! Here are a few suggestions for you:

221B verselet, abecedarian poetry, acrostic poetry, alexandrine, ballad, beeswing, blackout poetry, blues stanza, bref double, Burns stanza, call and response, chastushka, cinquain, circular poetry, clerihew, colour poems, concrete poetry, Cornish verse, curtal sonnet, diamante, doggerel, double dactyl, ekphrasis, elegiac couplet, elegiac stanza, elfje, englyn, epigram, epitaph, epulaeryu, Etheree, fable, Fib, florette, found poetry, free verse, ghazal, haiku, In Memoriam stanza, Italian sonnet, jueju, kennings poem, lanturne, limerick, lyric poetry, mathnawī, micropoetry, mini-monoverse, musette, palindrome poetry, pantoum, Parallelismus Membrorum, poem cycle, quintilla, renga, riddle, rime couée, Schüttelreim, sedoka, septet, sestina, sonnet, tanka, tercet, terza rima, tongue twister poetry, triangular triplet, triolet, Tyburn, villanelle

Please leave all your poems inspired by The Dying Detective in the comments on this post. I look forward to seeing them!

“The oysters and champagne were sublime – wouldn’t you say, Mrs. Hudson?”

“Oh yes, Doctor. Very thoughtful to take me to Simpson’s with you!”

“And their beef – his broth isn’t too hot, is it?”

“Just tepid, Doctor, per your orders. Unsalted.”

“Can’t risk your health after three days of fast, Holmes. …Their beef roast was superb, of course.”

“…I hate you.”

This Sunday, 11th December, we'll be posting our 60 word ficlets for The Dying Detective.

Mrs. Hudson comes to Watson with terrible news. Holmes has been seriously ill for three days and is now near death. Can a cure possibly be found in time..?

If you haven't tried 60 for 60 before, full information - including our schedule - can be found on our profile. But in essence: you read ACD's story and then you write a 60 word story inspired by it! You don't have to post a story every week - just join in whenever you feel like it.

Each Sunday we will also have our weekly discussion post, where we discuss a topic inspired by the canon story. And there’s Mrs. Hudson's Poetry Page too - any poems written about this week’s story can be left as a comment on her post. Mrs. Hudson informs me that the poetry form being revisited this week is the epulaeryu. And as always, her housemaid Rachel will be suggesting poems for us to read, to give us added inspiration.

You can choose one activity, or have a go at everything. Or just come along and read the 60s! (And have a chat in the comments.) All options are absolutely fine.

Hope to see you on Sunday. But don’t worry if you can’t join us then - we stay open for posting and commenting all week!

Title: Restaurant Review (as featured in the Marylebone Illustrated)
Author:thesmallhobbit
Rating: G

For readers seeking an excellent dining experience we would heartily recommend Simpson’s on the Strand.  Originally opened as a chess club and coffee house, the restaurant provides nothing but the highest quality British meat for all its guests.  Indeed the diners’ choice of large joint is brought to the table on a silver platter to be carved in their presence.

Summary: It is unhealthy both to eat a heavy meal after a 3-day fast, and to mis-use the affections of one’s closest friend.

“No Simpson’s for you tonight.” I pushed my friend back into his bed and raised my voice. “Mrs. Hudson! A bowl of broth. Unsalted.”

The dismay on Sherlock Holmes’ face was not feigned.

“A teaspoon every quarter-hour,” I said firmly. “Or is that prescription beyond my ‘mediocre qualifications’?”

I suspect the grim smile on our landlady’s face mirrored my own.

Author's Notes: It was with a sinking heart that I reëntered Holmes’s bedroom... A litter of pipes, tobacco-pouches, syringes, penknives, revolver-cartridges, and other debris was scattered over it. More than one kind of litter, of course…

KEEP OUT: LITTER INSIDE! read the sign.

Mrs. Hudson sighed and entered.

“Oh!”

Holmes smiled weakly. “The puppies are going to new homes shortly.”

“Good!” Mrs. Hudson paused. “Though… is that one still available?”

“How’s he settling in?” asked Mrs. Turner.

“Investigating everything! Destroying my furnishings.” Mrs. Hudson rubbed the puppy’s ears. “Oh, Sherlock. You’re a bad boy, aren’t you?”

N.B. Next Sunday we will be writing poems for the first half of The Valley of Fear and things will be as usual.

However, the Sunday after that—the 27th—I will be celebrating the season with Mrs. Turner and her family. And so, someone from the Marylebone Monthly Illustrated has graciously offered to produce the Poetry Page just for that week. I believe she has something rather lighthearted planned—but do please feel at liberty to prepare and post poems for the second half of The Valley of Fear as well, if you desire to do so.

Warm regards,

Mrs. Hudson

A.N.: This article makes the case that Smith used Berkholderia pseudomallei, also known as the Vietnamese time-bomb for its potential delayed effects, as his infectious weapon.

“Smith was wise in his selection. If his victim had escaped death initially, he might have succumbed later to a relapse or a rupture of an abscess.”
Holmes frowned at the plate of cold gruel on the table. He held up the iron-singed sleeve of his dressing gown.
“Much like Mrs. Hudson’s wrath at being conscripted involuntarily into my drama.”
