“Betzzz?”

“If the visiting humans will faint. If they will cry. If they will shout.”

“If I win?”

“Your hearts desiresss.”

Fly considered that short list. “If I lose?”

The spider shuffled something under its abdomen with its long legs. “We discussss that later.”

Another doctor supine on the bearskin, not alone this time.

“Poor child,” Holmes murmured, his chin on Watson’s chest. “To be used as a pawn by such a brother, and to be returned to such a father.”

Watson thought of two other boys in a country squire’s seat born far apart in age, another distant sire, and kissed his lover.

Title: An Innocent (the serialisation of the Private Journal of Dr Watson)
Author:thesmallhobbit
Rating: G

We journeyed back from Mackleton in silence.  That a man, devoted to one son, could allow the innocent younger half-brother to be treated in this way appalled me.  My only hope was the love of the returning mother, and the obvious care of the school, would help to heal the child’s mental distress.  He could expect none from his father.

Title: The Duchess Returns
Author: [livejournal.com profile] scfrankles
Rating: G
Author's Notes: "...I would suggest that you make such amends as you can to the Duchess, and that you try to resume those relations which have been so unhappily interrupted." "That also I have arranged, Mr. Holmes. I wrote to the Duchess this morning."

The Fates were mocking her.

On the ferry she’d spotted George. Still handsome…

Thankfully she’d escaped unseen.

The Duchess shivered.

She’d been a fool all those years ago. But her marriage had been so unhappy from the start.

She looked again at her husband’s letter and almost laughed. His illegitimate child banished forever, and his legitimate heir… wasn’t his son.

Welcome once again to my poetry page!

I hope each week you will read Dr. Watson’s delightful narrative and then go on to write a poem related to it in some way. All forms of poetry are permitted, and further down the page there is a selection you might like to consider using over the coming weeks.

And here, courtesy of my housemaid Rachel, is this week’s suggested poem to read—a suggestion inspired by the themes and subjects in this week's story. Hopefully you will enjoy the poem, and perhaps it may give you some ideas for a poem of your own or allow you to look at Dr. Watson's story in a new way.

King Lear, Edmund's monologue "Thou, nature, art my goddess"

Summary: Did Holmes forget how the story began? Sheesh!

“In that case—“

I interrupted.

“One final matter, your Grace, you will use your influence and your resources, if required, to remove the tarnish these machinations have cast upon the reputation of Doctor Huxtable and his school.”

The Duke nodded. “Very well.”

I looked at Holmes.

He may have forgotten his client, but I do not forget a patient.

Summary: There’s only so many uninvited and unannounced visitors a landlady can take.

***

When the cab-driver broke the window I called it an accident.

When the squire strode up the stairs and bent my good poker I took it for mere coincidence.

Stampeding brats, frightened fugitives, hired louts have changed my mind.

When the professor fainted on the bearskin I had my own two hired louts drag him away over Mr. Holmes’ protestations.

This Sunday, 14th May, we'll be posting our 60 word ficlets for The Priory School.

We have had some dramatic entrances and exits upon our small stage at Baker Street... Dr. Thorneycroft Huxtable arrives from the North of England in a most distressed state. The young son of the Duke of Holdernesse has gone missing from Huxtable's school. Does the also missing German master have anything to do with his disappearance? Holmes agrees to investigate...

If you haven't tried 60 for 60 before, full information - including our schedule - can be found on our profile. But in essence: you read ACD's story and then you write a 60 word story inspired by it! You don't have to post a story every week - just join in whenever you feel like it.

Each Sunday we will also have our weekly discussion post, where we discuss a topic inspired by the canon story. And there’s Mrs. Hudson's Poetry Page too - any poems written about this week’s story can be left as a comment on her post. As usual, her housemaid Rachel will be suggesting a poem for us to read to give us added inspiration, and there will also be a new poetry form to try: the barzelletta. (The linked page describes two different versions of the barzelletta. Mrs. Hudson is inclining towards the 'couplet barzelletta' as the instructions for the '2 part barzelletta' are turning her brain inside out, but do feel free to use either form.)

You can choose one activity, or have a go at everything. Or just come along and read the 60s! (And have a chat in the comments.) All options are absolutely fine.

Hope to see you on Sunday. But don’t worry if you can’t join us then - we stay open for posting and commenting all week!

Whilst readers have grown accustomed to seeing officials from the Post Office using bicycles to deliver telegrams, it is not as widely known that our troops are now also using bicycles for carrying despatches.  In addition bicycles are used to transport carrier pigeons.  The birds become distressed when transported on horseback, but take more kindly to being moved by bicycle.

Author's Notes: There is an inn here, the Red Bull… The people at the inn were alert all night…

They stayed one more night in Mackleton.

“Holmes!” cried Watson the next morning. “I’ve solved the Ferrers Documents case..!”

And Holmes listened in astonishment as the doctor explained. “Watson! That’s it!”

Watson beamed. “It’s all thanks to our celebration at the inn. I don’t know what’s in those Red Bull drinks but I didn’t close my eyes once last night!”

This Sunday, 6th September, we'll be posting our 60 word ficlets for The Priory School.

September is here once again, and Holmes and Watson are off back to school. Well, to the Priory School in Mackleton actually, in order to attempt to find the missing son of the Duke of Holdernesse. Has the child run away to try and be reunited with his estranged mother? Does an also missing German master have anything to do with his disappearance? Join us on Sunday to find out.

Canon Story: The Adventure of the Priory School
Title: Father
Author: [livejournal.com profile] vaysh

Words: 60

Saltire's trousers were stiff with mud. The Duke would be horribly displeased.

His friend, Caunter, called Lord Leverstoke Father. Saltire tasted the word in his mouth. 'Father.' It felt strange.

New voices were coming through the floorboards from the kitchen. He should scream, get help. But Mrs Hayes had asked him not to.

The Duke would find him... Father would.

Title: Tyres

It should not have surprised me that Holmes had written a monograph on different bicycle tyres.  For now, many years later, he can instantly detect which motor car has passed by purely from the imprint of its tyres.  Holmes has long since abandoned his attempts to educate me in all the subtle differences, disappointed by my complete lack of interest.
