Holmes and I raced after the glowing mountainous beast pursuing the terrified Sir Henry, dread at the inevitable filling us.

A small blur of white and black dashed in from the side and bowled the Hound off its feet.

Stunned, we caught up, and our guns ended the creature.

And the three of us petted a gaunt, tail-wagging curly-haired spaniel.

Warning: Extreme crack ahead. May prove incomprehensible to non-Americans.
Summary: “Hound of the Baskervilles” - Directed by Ed Wood.

***

Selden the convict loomed over Sir Henry and me, a massive bald behemoth with one expression: a contorted scowl. “Stay off moor,” he rumbled in a Swedish accent, his enormous fists flexing.

And suddenly Sherlock Holmes was wrapped around the lummox’s huge head. “Run!” he shouted.

As we stumbled past pasteboard headstones we heard a man in angora shout, “Cut!”

***

Author’s Note: Ed Wood Jr. was an eccentric 1950s American filmmaker infamous for making cheap, poorly-acted horror movies.  His stable of actors included fallen-on-hard-times Bela Lugosi – and a Swedish wrestler named Tor Johnson. (Wood was fond of wearing angora sweaters.)

My dear Holmes:

As ordered, I must not miss a report you ordered – so terribly imperiously! – so I write. I am resolute; Baskerville’s afraid but says I do not want for courage. Your Boswell’s a touch rusty; words come slowly sometimes to paper. Let me practice, and soon all of my skill I love will fill your reports. Sincerely, Watson.

“Aye, the Dog-killer’s got another one,” said the Bulldog gloomily.

“He looks fine, Reggie!” yipped his fellow stray, a rangy lurcher mix. Both watched as a human and a curly-haired spaniel walked through the door down the street, greeting the old woman.

“That place is death for dogs!” Reggie growled. “Mark my words, Dorcas – that poor little blighter is doomed.”

Author's Notes: Sir Henry and Dr. Mortimer were, however, in London, on their way to that long voyage which had been recommended for the restoration of his shattered nerves.

Sir Henry gazed at the walls of his cabin: the first, the second, the third.

“You know, Mortimer. I think… I’ve finally accepted Beryl can never be my wife.”

“Wife!”

Mortimer paled.

“I didn’t tell her I was going away! I completely forgot I was married!”

Sir Henry glanced at the fourth wall.

“Well. I think she’d slipped everybody’s mind.”

Welcome once again to my poetry page!

I hope each week you will read Dr. Watson’s delightful narrative and then go on to write a poem related to it in some way. All forms of poetry are permitted, and further down the page there is a selection you might like to consider using over the coming weeks.

And here, courtesy of my housemaid Rachel, is this week’s suggested poem to read—a suggestion inspired by the themes and subjects in this week's story. Hopefully you will enjoy the poem, and perhaps it may give you some ideas for a poem of your own or allow you to look at Dr. Watson's story in a new way.

He Made His Terror

by Dean P. Jeffress

Note from Rachel: This poem evokes Stapleton and his last attempt to murder Sir Henry on the dark, clouded, and moonlit road before he fled to his own death.

Thank you so much to Rachel. And here is my suggested form to revisit this week: kennings poem. (The link takes you back to a previous poetry page.)

But you do not have to use that form. Any form of poetry is welcome this week—and every week! Here are a few suggestions for you:

Sherlock Holmes held up an official-looking envelope. “From Mr. Frankland of Lafter Hall!”

Ah. Perhaps angry about Holmes’ questioning of his daughter –

My friend’s face froze as he read the letter.

“Holmes?”

He looked up at me, stricken. “Sir Henry is suing us for gross neglect and client endangerment.”

I looked at him. “’Us’? You’re on your own, old man.”

And we're into the final section! This Sunday, 25th September, we'll be posting our 60 word ficlets for The Hound of the Baskervilles, Chaps. 13-15.

We now know the identity of Sir Charles Baskerville's murderer. But can Holmes get the proof he needs for a conviction? And can he prevent Sir Henry from sharing his uncle's fate..?

If you haven't tried 60 for 60 before, full information - including our schedule - can be found on our profile. But in essence: you read ACD's story and then you write a 60 word story inspired by it! You don't have to post a story every week - just join in whenever you feel like it.

Each Sunday we will also have our weekly discussion post, where we discuss a topic inspired by the canon story. And there’s Mrs. Hudson's Poetry Page too - any poems written about this week’s story can be left as a comment on her post. Mrs. Hudson informs me that the poetry form being revisited this week is the kennings poem. Her housemaid Rachel is also back from her undercover work and so will as usual be suggesting a poem for us to read, to give us added inspiration.

You can choose one activity, or have a go at everything. Or just come along and read the 60s! (And have a chat in the comments.) All options are absolutely fine.

Hope to see you on Sunday. But don’t worry if you can’t join us then - we stay open for posting and commenting all week!

So, at least Holmes is here, but as far as I can see that is the only good thing about this case.  Selden is dead, and although a convict, no man deserves to die that way.  And we are still not in a position to act, which means Stapleton may yet accomplish what he has set out to do.  Damnation!
