Author's Notes: Sir Henry and Dr. Mortimer were, however, in London, on their way to that long voyage which had been recommended for the restoration of his shattered nerves.
Sir Henry gazed at the walls of his cabin: the first, the second, the third.
“You know, Mortimer. I think… I’ve finally accepted Beryl can never be my wife.”
“Wife!”
Mortimer paled.
“I didn’t tell her I was going away! I completely forgot I was married!”
Sir Henry glanced at the fourth wall.
“Well. I think she’d slipped everybody’s mind.”

Date: 2016-09-25 02:50 pm (UTC)Poor Mrs. Mortimer does just seem to slip out of the story altogether - she's mentioned at the beginning and I think she visits the hall once. Then Mortimer starts visiting Sir Henry on his own - and is perfectly happy to go round the world with him at the end, apparently having nothing to keep him at home.

Date: 2016-09-25 07:26 pm (UTC)I thought that Mrs. Mortimer is probably a local girl (and that's why Dr. Mortimer moved there) and a descendent of the yeoman's family. And like the Baskervilles with their legend written down on an ancient manuscript, the yeoman's family had the true story written down somewhere. Mrs. Mortimer perhaps discovers clues to the truth and investigates the story behind the legend.
