Canon Story: The Adventure of the Three Garridebs
Title: ... Heidelberg, Cro-Magnon, Flores Man
Words: 60
Rating: G
Warning | Contains: a passion for skulls
Author's Notes: This is pure fiction, as homo floresiensis was only discovered in 2003. Also, the Tolkien Estate takes issue with the small human ancestors being publicly referred to as 'hobbits'. Fair usage applies.

When on that fateful day, Mr. Nathan Garridebs had returned from Birmingham, he had found a cheque for three-hundred pounds, issued from the private accounts of Sherlock Holmes. The generous gift allowed him to acquire what had long been his heart's most fervent desire: a fossil of the smallest of the human races, homo floresiensis, his very own Hobbit skull.

Title: Endless Possibilities
Author: Mafief

Warnings: none
Author’s Notes: Nathan Garrideb dreams on his way to Birmingham.

The possibilities are endless now. What to complete first? Include a skull of Pithecanthropus erectus? Why not! I can finish my collection of Syracusan coins to rival, no, surpass that of the German collector. My collection of flint blades will be expanded to include artifacts found in Kansas, in honour of my soon-to-be benefactor.

Now to meet the third Garrideb…

This week we are reading The Three Garridebs.

I found this to be a much more interesting and satisfying case, tying up more of loose ends and cases with a spot of misadventure and friendship. For those of you who are following along with the suggested topic of the round, I think the theme of this case is hidden secrets and plots.

Bunny Evans?”

Holmes looked away from my glare. “A, er, reputation for…running like a rabbit when cornered.”

I folded my arms. “You could have asked me to join you because you wanted my company, you know. You didn’t have to create a fictional hazard.”

He nodded.

I pursed my lips. “I hear Simpson’s has a dangerous beef roast.”

We laughed.

It was fortunate I was not seriously injured.  As it is, Lestrade has been clucking round me like a mother hen, and refusing to countenance my assisting Holmes with further cases until he is confident I am fully recovered.  Even when I rise from my chair he is there, proffering his arm, despite my protestations of not being an invalid.

Author's Notes: I remember the date very well, for it was in the same month that Holmes refused a knighthood for services which may perhaps some day be described. Victoria had died the year before, leaving a minor request in her will…

“So… you’re going to turn it down?” Watson grinned. “But it’s such an honour…”

Holmes scowled. “It’d be different if it was for my work.”

He looked at the letter again.

“But I refuse to tell people it’s because I freed Queen Victoria’s bustle from Mycroft’s armchair!”

Watson laughed.

“Nice to see the old girl retained a sense of humour.”

Welcome once again to my poetry page!

I hope each week you will read Dr. Watson’s delightful narrative and then go on to write a poem related to it in some way. All forms of poetry are permitted, and further down the page there is a selection you might like to consider using over the coming weeks.

And here, courtesy of my housemaid Rachel, is this week’s suggested poem to read—a suggestion inspired by the themes and subjects in this week's story. Hopefully you will enjoy the poem, and perhaps it may give you some ideas for a poem of your own or allow you to look at Dr. Watson's story in a new way.

The Kiss

By Kurt Brown

Note from Rachel: It was a declaration of love, perhaps, with only one thing left unconfessed.

Thank you so much to Rachel. And here is also a new poetry form to try: the trine.

Definition and Example )

But you do not have to use this form. Any form of poetry is welcome this week—and every week! Here are a few suggestions for you:

Summary: What if it wasn't Holmes's revolver that cracked the 'killer' but maybe something a bit more dometic but just as brutal.

“Thank goodness I forgot my key! Put your gun away, sir. Mop handle was good enough for the General, it’s good enough for me. That, by the way, was for ripping the carpet! And this is for making that poor gentleman bloody my newly-waxed floor! D’you know how much dusting I do? Bet you don’t because your poor mother never…”

A tea-spoon clattered on the saucer. Watson grinned behind his newspaper.

A rustle as Holmes lowered the Strand. “Watson.” Disbelief. “I only queried if you were hurt, and at your negation I cuffed Evans.”

“So you didn’t blurt out your love like a panicked damsel?” Watson's voice sharpened. “Then use me better next time, Holmes, or I rewrite history again.”

This Sunday, 4th June, we'll be posting our 60 word ficlets for The Three Garridebs.

An Englishman and an American are on a quest to find another man who shares their unusual surname, in order to gain a huge inheritance. And so the Englishman asks for Holmes' assistance, though the American Garrideb doesn't seem too pleased about that...

If you haven't tried 60 for 60 before, full information - including our schedule - can be found on our profile. But in essence: you read ACD's story and then you write a 60 word story inspired by it! You don't have to post a story every week - just join in whenever you feel like it.

Each Sunday we will also have our weekly discussion post, where we discuss a topic inspired by the canon story. And there’s Mrs. Hudson's Poetry Page too - any poems written about this week’s story can be left as a comment on her post. As usual, her housemaid Rachel will be suggesting a poem for us to read to give us added inspiration, and there will also be a new poetry form to try: the trine.

You can choose one activity, or have a go at everything. Or just come along and read the 60s! (And have a chat in the comments.) All options are absolutely fine.

Hope to see you on Sunday. But don’t worry if you can’t join us then - we stay open for posting and commenting all week!

Title: Lucky
Author: [livejournal.com profile] rachelindeed

Evans felt more than heard the shifting floorboards. Two ageing crusaders aimed steadily at his head. He’d always been short on luck, but skill he had in spades.

He talked, smiled, distracted.

He aimed for the gut, but traded accuracy for speed. The bullet grazed a leg. Nearly missed altogether. A rotten shot.

But also the luckiest of his life.

For any readers who wish for suitable edification during their leisure hours, we would recommend a visit to the British Museum.  There, one can marvel at the Assyrian collection, as well as inspect the Rosetta Stone.  And for those who prefer flora and fauna, there is an excellent collection of such items at the Natural History Museum in South Kensington.

Title: A Sudden Holiday

The bohemian bachelors huddled over inexpensive spirits.  “Poor Garrideb,” said one.

“Prescott weren’t a bad sort at home,” said the collector of unusual beetles.

“Imagine, five million pounds, though.” said the painter.

“Dollars,” said Mr. Dombey, irritating the rest.

None of them wondered about Mrs. Saunders’s sudden holidays or worried when she never returned.  Who noticed caretakers except when needed?

Title: Would Any Garrideb Please Contact..?
Author: [livejournal.com profile] scfrankles
Rating: PG
Author's Notes: He had a cadaverous face, with… dull dead skin… “My doctor lectures me about never going out…” Behind his central table was a large cupboard of fossil bones. Above was a line of plaster skulls... “I had a brother, but he is dead, and female relatives are disqualified.” “I’ll call to-morrow, Mr. Nathan, and see you off to Birmingham.” He was last heard of at a nursing-home in Brixton. A zombie AU.

A ‘bite’ from a zombie’s skull led to (the late) Ezekiel Garrideb having to reinvent himself as Nathan, a long lost brother. But the decomposition progressed and while in Birmingham, Ezekiel’s frontal lobes disintegrated.

“I’ll advertise for his relatives,” his doctor sadly told the nursing home.

It was just unfortunate the transplant would have to come from a female brain.

Story: The Adventure of the Three Garridebs
Rating: Gen
Summary: While in the nursing-home in Brixton, Nathan Garrideb gets an unexpected visit that cheers him.

“G’morning, sir. Here’s my tale…”
“…and that’s how a scoundrel tricked an honest man for what was right under his blessed feet.”
The old man rattled in his chair, then extended a hand. “I am Nathan Garrideb.”
“A fine name.” The visitor bent and removed his hat. “Mine’s Jabez Wilson.”
The old man ruffled the visitor’s ginger locks and smiled.
