Canon Story: The Disappearance of Lady Frances Carfax
Title: Doctor’s Orders
Author: Mafief

Warnings: none
Author’s Notes: I’m bridging the gap between Holmes’ changed opinion of the Turkish baths from ILLU to LADY. Watson must have been very persuasive.
Summary Watson knew that both him and Holmes had been distrurbed by the conclusion of the case. He decided to do something about it.

“Come on, Holmes, off the settee. You have been there since yesterday”

The lump of dressing gown and rug grunted and kept motionless.

“We need a change, a cleanser of the system.”

The lump was unresponsive.

“We should go to the Turkish baths.”

“I have been before,” muttered Holmes.

“But not with me and not at the Northumberland Avenue establishment.”

Summary: They had gotten away at the end, after all. And they have an M.O.

***

They escaped, after the horror they inflicted on Lady Frances over her few baubles.

They must have seen the pearl on Watson’s watch-fob, a memento of his first spouse.

I tear through the cemetery; another gathering lowers a too-large coffin into the ground.

If I am too late, no rope will keep me from what I do to those two.

Marie Devine might be a devoted creature, but little Rosie Spender—named for her grandmother—didn’t have the luxury of devotion. She took care of herself, even if it meant making deals with devils like Holy Peters. Well, she’d got her inheritance and fifty pounds to boot. Now time for Marie, like Rosie, to disappear. Sea voyage? Yes. Sounded grand.

It is so typical of Holmes to pretend not to know with whom I went to the Turkish baths.  It is true he likes to demonstrate his powers of observation, but since he was present in the room when Lestrade and I had agreed we would be going, it did not require his superior intelligence to answer this particular question.

“I will marry you.”

Green looked up startled.

Frances looked grim. “Better the devil you know...”

Green shook his head.

He produced a photograph and letters of recommendation. “Miss Spencer—your new companion if you wish. Cultured, cynical and… trained in baritsu.”

Green stood to go.

“I said I loved you. I’ve realised it’s time I showed you I do.”

Welcome once again to my poetry page!

I hope each week you will read Dr. Watson’s delightful narrative and then go on to write a poem related to it in some way. All forms of poetry are permitted, and further down the page there is a selection you might like to consider using over the coming weeks.

And here, courtesy of my housemaid Rachel, is this week’s suggested poem to read—a suggestion inspired by the themes and subjects in this week's story. Hopefully you will enjoy the poem, and perhaps it may give you some ideas for a poem of your own or allow you to look at Dr. Watson's story in a new way.

De Profundis

By Christina Rossetti

Note from Rachel: After her horrifying ordeal, Lady Frances Carfax will surely have a long and difficult recovery. For a time she may feel a stranger in this living world, but I believe her fortitude and noble spirit will bring her one day to true healing.

Thank you so much to Rachel. And here is also a new poetry form to try: the débat.

Definition and Example )

But you do not have to use this form. Any form of poetry is welcome this week—and every week! Here are a few suggestions for you:

“I cannot congratulate you on your efforts, Watson!” Holmes had to shout over the thumping at our boarded-up door. "It would have been kinder and safer to let the poor woman die naturally!”

A skeletal hand broke through the door, still clad in a lovely chiffon sleeve. “Oh Mr. Holmes, just a taste of your magnificent brain!” Lady Frances begged.

This Sunday, 28th May, we'll be posting our 60 word ficlets for The Disappearance of Lady Frances Carfax.

Lady Frances Carfax has disappeared - last seen trying to return from Lausanne to London. Despite being accompanied by a respectable clergyman and his wife, could she have come to harm from the 'savage' man who has been following her..?

If you haven't tried 60 for 60 before, full information - including our schedule - can be found on our profile. But in essence: you read ACD's story and then you write a 60 word story inspired by it! You don't have to post a story every week - just join in whenever you feel like it.

Each Sunday we will also have our weekly discussion post, where we discuss a topic inspired by the canon story. And there’s Mrs. Hudson's Poetry Page too - any poems written about this week’s story can be left as a comment on her post. As usual, her housemaid Rachel will be suggesting a poem for us to read to give us added inspiration, and there will also be a new poetry form to try: the débat.

You can choose one activity, or have a go at everything. Or just come along and read the 60s! (And have a chat in the comments.) All options are absolutely fine.

Hope to see you on Sunday. But don’t worry if you can’t join us then - we stay open for posting and commenting all week!

We provide all that is required for the funeral of a loved one: an excellent choice from our wide selection of coffins; a suitable hearse pulled by four splendid black horses wearing ostrich feather plumes on their heads; the wide silk hat bands, silk scarves and black gloves so necessary for all those attending; even the epitaph can be arranged.

Our work remains with us in different ways. Holmes dreams of orange pips rolling in his hand, or snakes dropping onto him; I face a red-eyed giant hound or watch, helpless, as Holmes and Moriarty topple into the abyss.

But one night after the Carfax case we both awoke, gasping for air and clawing at the lids of invisible coffins.

Author's Notes: "I don't admit that a fresh illustration is an explanation..."

“He’s had another go!” Watson handed over the sheet of paper. “Sorry, Mrs. Hudson. Ever since Holmes developed laryngitis, he’s become wedded to the idea that drawing his wishes is easier than writing them.”

Mrs. Hudson tilted the sketch. “So. For dinner he wants... is that a harpsichord?”

Watson shrugged. “The art in Mr. Holmes’ blood takes very strange forms.”

Story: The Disappearance of Lady Frances Carfax

Rating: Teen (for mention of violence)

Summary: The story behind Holy Peters’ torn ear.

The man slammed his pint down. “The worse fight I ever been in was Adelaide, ’89…”

“Yeah?”

“…with a man so evil he’d lock you in a box and watch you die just to line his own pocket.”

“You kill ‘em?”

“Nah, walked right into that saloon and set ol’ Rex on him.”

The dog lifted its head and woofed.

This Sunday, 6th December, we'll be posting our 60 word ficlets for The Disappearance of Lady Frances Carfax.

What has become of Lady Frances Carfax, last seen attempting to return to London in the reassuring company of a clergyman and his wife? Did the "savage" man who was harassing her in Switzerland finally catch up with her..?

You know that I cannot possibly leave London. [...] Scotland Yard feels lonely without me.

I glared at my diary.

Besides Abrahams’ case, Gregson needs my testimony in two days. Lestrade will come consult Clapham arsons, tomorrow at the latest. Hopkins presumably solved that burglary already, I expect his report today. Even Bradstreet asked for advice.

Perhaps if I reschedule... No, it won’t do.

No other choice then. “How would Lausanne do, my dear Watson?”

I had hoped that Holmes would not pursue the question of who I had shared a cab with.  He is not normally given to jealousy, but the knowledge that my companion was none other than Inspector Stanley Hopkins might have affected him.  Not that he had any cause for worry, since I still only have eyes for my dearest Lestrade.
