Author’s Notes: About that dress…

Alice stood still on the dressmaker’s pedestal to prevent the pins from stabbing her. The bolt of electric blue fabric had caught her eye weeks ago and she knew she must have a dress in that striking colour. Watching the dressmaker patiently sew the hem, she thought of Mr. Fowler and the impression her new dress might have on him.

He speaks German and French, is a violin virtuoso, has art in his family.

I tell him my talents as a governess (German and French, music, drawing).

I unpin my wealth of beautiful hair practically into his lap – which has melted stronger men in this time.

But his eyes are only for his Doctor when he shoots Carlo, not me.

Summary/notes:  Sherlock Holmes had other things on his mind than the self-sufficient Violet.

Mrs. Fowler.  Never had words sounded so sweet.  Alice packed for their wedding tour through bustling urban places and beaches, far from the country sounds that still brought her screaming awake from a sound sleep at night.

The day before they left a parcel came.  Her hair.  And a card, “a city has its own kind of quiet.”  --SH

Title: Living Arrangements (the serialisation of the Private Journal of Dr Watson)
Author: thesmallhobbit

It was probably unreasonable of me to expect Holmes to maintain an interest in Miss Violet Hunter.  She would, as a good governess, have insisted on organising his living space, which he would never have tolerated.  Poor Mrs Hudson has enough troubles in that direction and she does not have to share rooms with him.  I mostly ignore the chaos.

“I’m sorry it took me so long to realise you were being kept prisoner.”

Fowler took Alice’s hand.

“I only understood when the woman in the window turned to me.”

“Oh! You saw her face?” said Alice.

“No.” Fowler looked bewildered at the memory. “She… waved me away.”

Alice laughed and hugged him. “As if I would ever do that.”

Welcome once again to my poetry page!

I hope each week you will read Dr. Watson’s delightful narrative and then go on to write a poem related to it in some way. All forms of poetry are permitted, and further down the page there is a selection you might like to consider using over the coming weeks.

And here, courtesy of my housemaid Rachel, is this week’s suggested poem to read—a suggestion inspired by the themes and subjects in this week's story. Hopefully you will enjoy the poem, and perhaps it may give you some ideas for a poem of your own or allow you to look at Dr. Watson's story in a new way.

Escape

by Fombona Rufino Blanco

[Translated from the original Spanish]

Note from Rachel: The long-suffering Miss Alice must often have dreamed of escape.

Thank you so much to Rachel. And here is my suggested form to revisit this week: doggerel. (The link takes you back to a previous poetry page.)

But you do not have to use that form. Any form of poetry is welcome this week—and every week! Here are a few suggestions for you:

Title: I Say, Watson!
Canon Story: Copper Beeches
Rating: Gen
Summary: In which Holmes harrumphs.
Author's Note: For once, Holmes is the author-self-insert.

’Running up, I blew its brains out….’ I say, Watson!”
“Blame the editors. They are now clamouring for less comic relief, more action!”
He harrumphed.  “But for the mirror, I’d hardly know who we are anymore!”
I glanced at our reflections in the glass. “We do make a fetching pair, don’t we?”
He smiled. “Indeed. Illustrator and editors be damned.”

Summary: How to deal with the child?

***

And what of the horrendous child, a clue to his toxic family? Too young to be quietly shipped off to South America or Africa or some other Empire holding. Too inhumane to lose him at sea.

Perhaps young Master Rucastle will become the poshest member of the Baker Street Irregulars, once the lads train the cruelty out of his behavior.

This Sunday, 24th July, we'll be posting our 60 word ficlets for The Copper Beeches.

A young governess has been offered a position that has astonishingly generous pay but also has some very curious conditions attached. Just what is going on at The Copper Beeches..?

If you haven't tried 60 for 60 before, full information - including our schedule - can be found on our profile. But in essence: you read ACD's story and then you write a 60 word story inspired by it! You don't have to post a story every week - just join in whenever you feel like it.

Each Sunday we will also have our weekly discussion post, where we discuss a topic inspired by the canon story. And there’s Mrs. Hudson's Poetry Page too - any poems written about this week’s story can be left as a comment on her post. Mrs. Hudson informs me that the poetry form being revisited this week is doggerel. And as always, her housemaid Rachel will be suggesting a poem for us to read, to give us added inspiration.

You can choose one activity, or have a go at everything. Or just come along and read the 60s! (And have a chat in the comments.) All options are absolutely fine.

Hope to see you on Sunday. But don’t worry if you can’t join us then - we stay open for posting and commenting all week!

“One last governess duty, Mr. Holmes,” Miss Hunter said shakily. “And then I will be done with this house forever.” She went down to the cellar.

Our conversation with the local police was interrupted by a smacking sound and an apelike howling. The police and I started in fear.

But Sherlock Holmes smiled. “A spoilt child given his first slippering.”

Research

I find Violet Hunter's hair strangely fascinating. When I touch it (purely for scientific research) I am curious as to how such a simple thing can produce such a profound effect; accelerated heartbeat, dilated pupils, a strange fluttering sensation in my midsection.

Can this be arousal? Then why do I feel it so strongly when I touch my Watson's hand?

Instructions for Mrs. Hudson

Smoking the clay pipe: he is thinking. Disturb as little as possible.

Smoking the cherry-wood: in disputatious mood. Do not make eye contact. Do not enter into arguments about the Semitic language of the ancient Chaldeans.

Smoking the meerschaum: evacuate entire building immediately. Telegraph me thereafter.

Good luck. Stay calm. I will be back on Tuesday.

This Sunday, 26th April, we'll be posting our 60 word ficlets for The Copper Beeches.

Miss Violet Hunter approaches Holmes for advice. Should she take up the offered position of governess in the Rucastle household? It comes with some curious conditions attached, and Holmes himself declares he would not like to see a sister of his apply for the situation...
