Green looked up startled.

Frances looked grim. “Better the devil you know...”

Green shook his head.

He produced a photograph and letters of recommendation. “Miss Spencer—your new companion if you wish. Cultured, cynical and… trained in baritsu.”

Green stood to go.

“I said I loved you. I’ve realised it’s time I showed you I do.”

Well... I like to think he really did love her. And her recovery would give him some time to contemplate.

I personally think he does love her, and that he's not a bad man through and through. But he has been putting his own feelings first.

Perhaps the distress of nearly losing Lady Frances to murder and having to watch her recover afterwards will finally make him muse on what loving someone actually means.

I must admit I have some sympathy for Green though I can't approve of his behaviour. I believe that he does love Lady Frances in a way, but he has been putting his own feelings first.

I like to think that after all Lady Frances has been through, Green will start to consider what's best for her instead.

THANK YOU. That so-called happy ending of her marrying someone she had been been running away from has never settled well for me. And I applaud you ability to bring this up and still provide a happy ending.

(When I attempted it, the happy ending was much, much farther down the pike.)

Perhaps I'm being too optimistic - but I do like to think Green will eventually start to look at things from Lady Frances' point of view.
