This week we are reading The Hound of the Baskervilles, Chapters 13 through 15.

And so now we are at our conclusion! Two deaths now as well as some very suspicious suspects and some missing objects. But Holmes' investigation points to Stapleton who was rather conveniently at the scene of the death of the convict.

Holmes tells Stapleton he'll be returning to London the next day and leaves the entomologist on the moor alone. Holmes and Watson meet up with Henry Baskerville for dinner after which Holmes shows Watson that the portait of the Baskerville who began the mystery looks like the twin to Stapleton!

The next day, Holmes again repeats that he'll be going back to London, Watson as well, and urges Henry to keep his dinner appointment with the Stapletons. At the train station, however, Holmes leads Watson to call upon Mrs. Lyons, who reveals more details. Stapleton had assured her he was single and if they could only obtain the money for her divorce, they could wed. She's urged Charles Baskerville for the money, but Stapleton then asks her to not keep the appointment and then swears her to secrecy. And so now we know why Charles was waiting to see her.

Holmes and Watson meet with Lestrade at the station before heading back to Grimpen Mire. They wait behind some rocks for Stapleton to make his move -- post dinner they suspect. And indeed despite a tense meal, Henry leaves and is soon followed by a hound -- one that appears ghastly enough to shock even Holmes who was waiting for something spectacular. Six bullets later and the hound dies. Henry, though he was set upon, survived the ordeal with no physical wounds. The dog, Watson discovers, had phosphorous on his mouth, aiding his appearance as a hell hound.

The four go back to the Stapleton's home, but find nothing of the man. The woman how is bound in a room and gives more details, including where Stapleton could've gone. But though they try to follow it, they cannot find him. Holmes proposes that though Stapleton may have had a path marked out, his run in the night might have caused him to take a wrong step. He's never seen again.

And so closes the case of the Hound of the Baskervilles. No hell hound abound, but certainly a plot from a cousin that no one suspected could've ever existed. And though Holmes again kept his cards close and erred to close to danger for some, the Baskerville family lives on.
