This week we are reading The Hound of the Baskervilles, Chapters 5 through 8. It carries the theme of net of suspects and places.

These chapters start with a luncheon with Sir Henry and Dr Mortimer where a new boot has been lost and one found; more, we find out that a far distant relative stands to inherit if Henry dies and his money would follow. The servants of the house inherited 500 pounds, but the bulk went to Henry. Dr Mortimer identifies the stalker as likely to be the butler. Following that, Holmes' three leads don't pan out; the butler is likely at the manor, no hotel has any cuttings for the threatening note, and the stalker used Holmes' own name!

It is decided that Watson go with Sir Henry and Dr Mortimer because at present Holmes cannot leave London, having another case on his hands. Though the trip to Grimpton is bright, upon arriving, all mood sours. There are soldiers in the town, hunting down an escaped convict; the town is tense. The manor is gloomy and haunted by the ghosts of those who came before. The Barrymores are an interesting couple -- he very introverted and she hiding her tears. Watson's report to Holmes bears out that Barrymore himself wanders the halls at night. And more, the post master confirms that it is actually possible that Barrymore could have been in London; the letter was delivered through his wife and she was the one who returned the answer.

We close with a few more characters: one neighbor who spends his time hunting down old laws and lands. The other are brother and sister, Stapletons. He approaches Watson on his own and though it seems like small talk, one gets the impression of more. She warns Watson to go back to London, assuming he is the new Sir Henry, but still she insists. Despite this however, she is very approachable and Sir Henry develops an interest in her -- though her brother seems against a match.
