A/N: I've caught up! After a dark post for my last ficlet, I decided on a whimsical, light-hearted look at another, unintended victim of the Red-Headed League.

"Next" erupted from behind the semi-closed door. I excitedly adjusted my waist-coast and started toward when another gentleman with hair nearly as fiery-orange as mine stepped in.

Shocked, I heard them fawn o'er his hair and congratulate him.

Shouts of "Vacancy Filled!!" pierced my spirit. Perfect for the League, was I. Alas, this wretched red mop brought me misfortune again.

Accustomed as I am with annoyance at Holmes, he really went too far this time. His performance had me running the gamut of emotions: surprise, fear, regret.

Yes. His acting was impeccable. And so was mine! For I saw no signs that he felt (despite my relief) my deep albeit probably brief anger at having been manipulated once again.

A/N: I fear our good friend Watson may be kidding himself if he thinks his acting job fooled Holmes. However, his bruised ego needs to bathe in the comfort of hos perception whether it was genuinely effective or not.

A/N 2: If we are to believe Baring-Gould's dating...today, November 19th, is the 125th anniversary of this case to the very day.

I do like the thwarted red head in the first one, and Watson's stoical comments in the second:-)

Hadn't thought much about the other, "less fortunate" applicants. Thanks for bringing up at least one applicant's perspective!

Nice twist on the second fic. Both acting. Who fools who? One may never know! Well done.

Heh, I'm glad I'm not red-haired for that sort of turndown might have been too much. ;)

Maybe Watson should show some anger, you know. Because Holmes may just not know that he hurt him. But that makes the tragedy of it, I suppose.

Oh, no! The poor red-headed fellow in line for the league! Cute angle. :)

And the second -- well, Holmes is a lucky man, because he deserves a much worse reaction than that for what he did. He is just amazingly fortunate to have such a forgiving companion.

Fantastic point about the date! I love that! What a fun coincidence.
