The Yellow Face: Unframed Portrait

Title: Unframed Portrait
Canon Story: The Yellow Face
Rating: Gen
Summary: Mister Beecher approves.

“… ‘Norbury’ may represent the failure of your mental faculties, Holmes, but it was also a triumph of compassion, of humanity. And perhaps,” I walked to the portrait that stood atop a pile of books, “I shall celebrate Mister Munro’s acceptance of the girl and his wife’s past by finally giving Mr. Henry Ward Beecher his proper framing and placement.”

...it was also a triumph of compassion, of humanity. I've just been refreshing my memory as to Henry Ward Beecher. I suppose Watson is thinking of Beecher's stand against slavery. But I'm also wondering if Watson is thinking of Beecher's private life.

Obviously Mrs. Munro has nothing to be ashamed of, even if she feared her new husband might have rejected her and her daughter, but I gather Beecher was sued by a friend over adultery with the friend's wife (though the jury couldn't reach a verdict). Did Watson vacillate over getting the picture framed and hung because he wasn't sure if he should admire Beecher or not? And now he's decided to accept him wholly - any failings the man had, don't take away from his achievements.

An entirely appropriate response.

Very neat, and good Watson-ing. If this didn't happen it should.
