Kind of a slow start to the week but there's nothing wrong with that. Got a bit of crochet done and messaged a couple people on Facebook Marketplace about furniture pieces.

I'm considering getting Travis's new tank at retail just to assure myself of his safety but I think that's probably just me being nervous over nothing. I mean, it's a terrarium. Chill out, me. There were some promising listings on Marketplace but nothing within my budget before next payday. Here's hoping they don't sell before then-- or at least that I can find something just as good or even better if they do.

What I'm really worried about finding is a proper piece to put his tank on. I'd like an entertainment cabinet of some kind, for the storage space, but I haven't seen a lot in the right dimensions. Might pop around to the local thrift shops if Marketplace doesn't cough up what I need. Push comes to shove, I can always get a wire shelving rack similar to the one he's on now and just shove some cube shelves under it. There are always cube shelves on Marketplace.

Aaand I think this is the last I'll say about my room until I get what I need to finish, to keep from boring you all too much with these nothing updates, lol. I feel like I've made that promise before but I mean it this time!

I'm pretty satisfied with how today went, as far as reorganizing. I tricked myself into believing it would look a little more put together already but aside from some minor sprucing up I've not bothered to do I've gone as far as I can go without those furniture pieces I don't have yet. I'll be keeping an eye out for those but, as I said, they're not high priority, financially speaking. I can wait a few more months for the room I want. Even just moving the furniture has made it feel so much better already.

Now that I'm this far along, I'm shifting my focus to listing the eBay items and using up the excess yarn and other craft supplies. Also to deciding how I'm going to approach my decorating. I wasn't able to completely clear that one bookcase-- the bottom shelf still has a couple cube drawers' worth of things I decided I didn't want to put out of convenient reach-- but I've still got a bunch of space to work with. I have the top of my bookcase-for-actual-books cleared available now as well, though I'll probably treat that as a more miscellaneous display space rather than a space to expand my main collection. I still don't want to put up my wall art again until I've got the future furniture sorted out.

Courses - June/July 2025

FutureLearn

Italian for Beginners - Part 4 (Open University)
Much to my surprise I'm finding I'm able to complete the quizzes with fewer mistakes and understanding more, which is encouraging.

What do Popular Songs Mean? (University of Leeds)
Like the previous music course I've done with Leeds Uni, this was aimed at potential music students, which I imagine is only a very limited proportion of those taking FutureLearn courses.  Some things were interesting, some were a reminder of things I learnt on an OpenLearn course; at other times they would teach about analysis, but then when I came to work through an example for myself the answer would come up 'you may think xxx, but in this case yyy applies'.  And in at least one occasion there seemed to be a contradiction between something stated earlier and than later in the course.

OpenLearn

Egyptian Mathematics
I read through the course, but it lacks the presentation of later courses.  It was interesting to see a little about Egyptian mathematics, although very little has survived, probably because most of their maths had to do with practical problems they encountered rather than matters they deemed sufficiently important to save for posterity.

Babylonian Mathematics
Similarly with this course, although there was a small amount that was presumably kept for teaching purposes.  Unlike our modern maths, with a decimal system of counting, the Babylonians worked in 60s, so comparing then and now isn't always easy.

The Science of Nutrition & Healthy Eating
My latest badged course.  Definitely interesting and made me consider what I do eat.  Not sure it will change my diet - but I'm more aware of food labels and what I should be considering.

Well, I was definitely wrong about getting all the plants done, lol. For as pumped as I was, I just could not focus. I'll probably still finish the two smaller pieces tomorrow but not the bigger two.

The lack of focus extended to my reorganization efforts but I've got a lot more done on that front. I have to keep reminding myself of that because I'm currently in the middle of that "dark before dawn" period of rearranging where everything is everywhere and it looks awful, lol. I got the furniture moved, I got the under-bed storage situation situated. The main issue now is getting everything squared so I can put it all up on my closet shelves tomorrow. Found more Goodwill stuff and some to-be-sold stuff I'd put up and forgotten about, which will just have to be put aside for now. Made some slight recalculations re: new storage furniture pieces I want, mostly to do with where I want to put it, which obviously affects how I want things arranged now. Little things like that have set me back more than they should've, due to the aforementioned lack of focus.

I know I can get done tomorrow but I'm no longer so certain about actually managing it. Trying to be kind to myself on that front but it's so frustrating... I'm not giving up, though!! I'm so close, I can feel it. I think I need to just shove aside the "deal with it later" items, whether it's donations or stuff to be sold or things that I don't have the storage pieces for yet, and refuse to think about any of it until I finish figuring out the things I plan to actually live with. I think that's a not insignificant part of what's tripping me up, when I actually can manage to pay attention to what's in front of me. Gonna bank on that, anyway, and see if putting it all out of sight helps.

Final stretch! Just gotta bring it home.

Collage Journaling: Alice

Not my best work. I've done several Alice in Wonderland-themed collages which are much better than this. But my brain is not my friend at the moment, and I have filled up the last of my three inserts I was using for collage so I will be using my Agatha Christie notebook and my art notebook going forward. Both are smaller but I think that might be a good thing.

Sunshine Revival Challenge #2

Creative Prompt: Write a love poem to anyone or anything you like

Who or what do I love?
Let's go with cakes
There's my husband, of course
And the scones which he bakes
And the Daughter
To whom we send Christmas cake
Plus her sibling the Son
Who takes us out for cake
I have some good friends
And yes, we do discuss cake
Not to mention my church
With a variety of cake
Shakespeare wrote sonnets
And I eulogise cake!

Not quite the day I planned for but I still feel good about getting stuff done this weekend. Gonna get some furniture moved around tomorrow and do the heavy reorganizing. Then probably Sunday will be dedicated to figuring out the smaller details and to collection weeding. I also think I can finish the crochet plants tomorrow aside from finishing touches, which can also be handled on Sunday in between organizing tasks.

Saw 40 Acres tonight! Considering the title and the main cast being a Black and Indigenous blended family headed by former soldiers, I was expecting a more direct political critique. It ended up being pretty subtle, though. Still trying to decide how I feel about its approach, tbh. The racial and community politics are very much there-- there are a couple direct references to the way the government has treated BIPOC people and the family explicitly engages with Black Marxist theory as part of their educational curriculum. But I felt like more could've been explored, especially as regards community and how the parents' approach might've been shaped by their military experience. Then again, the racial makeup of the cast is a conversation in itself, so maybe the creative team wanted to let the setup speak its own piece so the story could focus elsewhere.

The movie is a dystopian thriller set after a fungal plague has wiped out most animal life on Earth. Food is scarce and good farmland is the hottest commodity. The matriarch of the Freemans took her family isolationist during the fallout, surrounding their farm with an electric fence, and has raised her children to survive and to kill. The plot kicks off with word through the Network that other homesteads have been attacked and is driven by the oldest son's growing desire for human contact outside his family.

All the actors put in great performances and the family dynamics feel genuine and lived in. Everyone has their own voice and you really get the sense that this family is a community unto itself. I found the juxtaposition of the horror inherent to the way they've been raised with the sweeter and the simply more mundane moments they share to be highly effective for making the premise believable.

There's a good sense of not only the family's isolation but of their vulnerability throughout the movie. It's there in the characters' behavior, of course, but also in the way their land is set up and what we see of the way they live. There's a visceral sense of the rising threat through the comm chatter we overhear-- probably my favorite little touch in the movie. And the cinematography and sound design really bring it all home. There are some incredible shots and sequences in this movie, especially once we get into the thick of the action. The fight scenes straddle the line between gritty and typical action movie nonsense and they ride that line well.

I didn't find anything terribly special about the story itself. Though it definitely beats its own drum, its beats are familiar to the genre. The story plays out basically how you'd expect it to once everything is set up. This was hardly a disappointment for me, personally, since it let the performances and the action alike shine and left ample space to consider those subtle politics dynamics and to ponder over what little we learn about the backstory of this world.

So, yeah, would recommend!

Into the Void

For new friends, personal posts not on Tuesdays are called 'Into the Void' as in 'Screaming into the Void'

THANK YOU to everyone for the well wishes on the new job. I will respond individually but I just wanted to do a quick blast of thanks now. Orientation went well. I have clients starting MONDAY! I am low-key terrified, but that's to be expected with something so new. So my schedule will be 8 am to 2 pm with going from one client's house to a second client.

Lots of deep breaths...

THANK YOU!

I expected this would be a slow week at work, what with the Fourth, but it's been pretty normal so far and it looks like tomorrow will be too. Not complaining, just confused.

Got slowed up on the crochet plant progress because my focus shifted to finishing reading my last book of June and then I just kinda forgot about it yesterday. Still, I'm pretty sure I can get everything finished up this weekend. Might do a few for myself after this, tbh, I'm finding these super charming. If not a full plant, maybe just some vines I can hang from my window or something. Although having a little prop plant for my Transformers could be fun...

Making myself decorations takes a backseat to finishing the organizing, of course, which I'm still also aiming to do this weekend. I won't quite be able to get everything I wanted done, unfortunately. Looking at what I've got to work with financially, I just don't think the furniture pieces I had in mind are high enough of a priority to be spending on right now. I let myself forget sometimes but I'm still recovering from that fiasco last year. I also let a credit card balance go off the rails because I forgot which accounts I was using. I really need to close a few of these now that my credit score is so solid... Anyway, yeah, I'm gonna have to make space on the closet shelves that I wasn't planning for but that'll be fine. I'll still have things at ground level pretty well dealt with and I can just look at this as having more time to find the perfect pieces.

I've got plans after work with my sister tomorrow but I don't expect to be out too terribly late. I can get some work on the plants, get some work done on my room and make up a to-do list for the long weekend. I know I've said this before and had mixed results but I really feel good about wrapping things up! Well, as much as is possible right now, anyway.

Word: Halyard

Wednesday's word is...

...halyard [hal-yerd]

noun

1. any of various lines or tackles for hoisting a spar, sail, flag, etc., into position for use.

---

I found this in Dear Mr. Henshaw by Beverly Cleary

First Mr. Fridley fastened the U.S. flag on the halyard (that's a new word in my vocabulary) and then fastened the California flag below it.

Sunshine Revival Challenge #1 & 25 Things in 2025: Third Quarter & Second Half

Sunshine Revival Challenge #1 - Journaling Prompt: Light up your journal with activity this month.
Talk about your goals for July or for the second half of 2025.

I'm working my way through 25 things in 2025, and have completed the first 14, as well as chosen 2 for April to September.  Which means it's time to choose the next 5, leaving 3 for the final quarter, plus Thing #1 which is simply to complete and write about the other 24 Things.

They are:

Quarter 3 - July to September

18 - Take part in the Big Butterfly Count
This runs from 18 July to 10 August and further details can be found here.  Part of my plan to support wildlife.

19 - Sort out my current papers/documents
They're all filed in an expanding file, so I can find everything, but it's time to move the oldest papers elsewhere, so they can be stored but I don't need them to hand.  Another of the 'I really should do this sometime' tasks, which should now get done.

20 - Sort Anchor threads
A few weeks ago I bought a box for storing my Anchor threads, so I can find the colours I want easily.  All I have to do now is get round to sorting them.  That is definitely a challenge, which is why I've added it here.

Half 2 - July to December

21 - Take part in the weekly Garden Bird Watch
I started this as part of 30 Days of Wildlife, and the intention is to keep going for six months, after which I will automatically continue or realise it's simply not working.

22 - Revise some German
I only have very basic German, which every so often I go back over.  As we shall be on holiday in Germany next April, it wouldn't hurt to go over it again.  We're on a tour, so it mostly won't be needed, but there's always buying cakes etc!

23 - Autumn Holiday
We haven't decided where we're going this year, but we'll be going somewhere, probably in early October, which is when we usually go, so I'm including this as one of my things I'm doing this year.

My full list can be found here

Views & News

1. The big news...Orientation is Thursday...I have a job! Orientation is PAID. I haven't been paid for work since 2015. This is a big deal! I know I will cycle through anxiety and fear but it's incredible that it's even happening!

Not much else to compete with that. We took the kids to Costco for the first time on Monday, and they were impressed. I am trying to get my cleaning done and my soap opera update written because at the end of orientation I will meet with a scheduler and I have no idea what that will be like.

Apparently the delay was my last employer (the nursing home) not having employment records going back that far so they couldn't verify my employment. So I had to dig up decade old tax forms and scan them and send them in to prove I did work at some point.

I bought 2 EXIT games to play with the fam. We'll see how that goes.
