The Three Students: Fun and Games

Canon Story: The Three Students
Title: Fun and Games
Author: [livejournal.com profile] scfrankles
Rating: G
Author's Notes: “...the landlady babbled of green peas at seven-thirty.” “Quite a little parlour game…”

"Hot boiled beans and butter; walk in and find your supper!" chanted everyone.

Holmes re-entered the room and began a determined search.

“Cold!” called Hopkins.

“Cold!” called Mrs. Hudson.

“Even colder!” laughed Watson.

Lestrade furrowed his brow. “When do we tell him we didn’t hide the thimble?” he whispered.

“Oh, he’s the genius,” grinned Watson. “Let him work it out.”

I had to google this, but I like it. Maybe it was something they did regularly to distract Holmes. And I liked the peas comment, so random.

I have a 6 month old baby who is just starting solids and green peas is the only of the 1st foods that he objects to. You should see his face! Complete horror and disgust as only an infant can express. I expect Holmes to have the same internal reaction.

Great entertainment for all concerned. I wonder how long it will take for Holmes to work out there is no hidden thimble?

To be sung to the following tune (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a2XMycEi5Qw)....

Of all jolly pastimes good fellowes do use,
Sleuth-baiting is best, I like it to chuse...
And where be thy thimble?
Ay, where be thy thimble?
Looke sharpe and be nimbull
Oh where be thy thimble -
And now he cries 'fraudsters!'
And now he cries 'fraudsters!'
...And this is baiting of the sleuth,
A sport housekeepers love in all truth.
Who loveth it not hath wits awry,
I'll play untill the punch goes dry!

Hee hee hee.

I've only just discovered this group (I'm more familiar with the group Oak Ash and Thorn's version of this tune).

Good thing I didn't pull out my Baltimore Consort collection of filthy 17th-century tavern songs...
