Von Bork still struggling behind them, the friends climbed into the little Ford. Watson adjusted the controls and then got out again.

“Have you forgotten something?” asked Holmes, puzzled.

Watson smiled. “How did you contrive to pass yourself off as a motor expert?” He waved the starting handle. “As we’re now departing, it’s time for me to wind things up.”

Author's Notes: Finally, holding either arm, the two friends walked him very slowly down the garden walk…

Von Bork
Was escorted down the garden walk.
He was feeling a tiny bit of wrath
Because Holmes had led him up the garden path.

(A/N: Yes, I know. But in my neck of the woods “wrath” and “path” rhyme.)

Notes: Holmes' PoV. And no Beta-reading for these, pray your forgiveness.

"Stand with me here upon the terrace, for it may be the last quiet talk that we shall ever have."

We enjoyed each other’s company before the departure, reminiscing and chattering, when Watson suddenly asked: “Supposing you had the chance, would you come back in time?”

In his eyes I saw the memory of bygone youth, of an era of horse-drawn carriages and shimmering gaslight.

Oh, how I long for living through it once again, another lifetime by his side.

A/N: This is war, no-one escapes.

The three men stood silently before the war memorial.  Holmes, bearing the results of his activities, still classified, leaned heavily on his stick.  Watson’s face was etched with the horrors he had seen even behind the battle lines.  Only Hopkins appeared unscathed, until Holmes took him by the arm to lead him gently away; he had been blinded in action.

American Altamont
Found  things for which von Bork had a want
The information Holmes provided in disguise
Provided some truths but many more lies
