Canon Story: His Last Bow
Title: Aftermath

A/N: This is war, no-one escapes.

The three men stood silently before the war memorial.  Holmes, bearing the results of his activities, still classified, leaned heavily on his stick.  Watson’s face was etched with the horrors he had seen even behind the battle lines.  Only Hopkins appeared unscathed, until Holmes took him by the arm to lead him gently away; he had been blinded in action.

The last line took my breath away. That was so mean to poor Stanley. Yet, it somehow ring true.

This was such a brave and bold decision on your part, especially for poor Hopkins. There's such love and friendship there - I like to think there will be happiness for these men again in time.

It was hard doing that to Hopkins, but this was no fairy tale. I think the fact that they are all three standing together means there is hope.

*gulps* To see Holmes, Watson and Hopkins as survivors of WW1 is devastating - I had never imaged such a scene, and now I will not be able to forget it.

I think it's nice to imagine that they all finished the war without any trauma, but it wasn't like that and for once I wanted to be realistic.
