Holmes admitted that he'd made a blunder in his initial assessment of the case. Not that anyone can be blamed for thinking murder is committed by men and not by animals.

But I can not help but wonder if all this trickery and elusiveness in regards to the location of dear Silver Blaze is simply Sherlock's ego regaining lost ground.
