THOR -- The Problem of Thor Bridge

The depths of winter were always hardest on Holmes, but I had never seen him so badly off as this. Nothing I did seemed to help. Worse, I saw the previously-conquered longing for the needle grow in his depressed gaze.

Desperate, I turned to the written word, hoping the black-and-white phrases might reach him as my spoken words had not.

“…had I not feared to give the public a surfeit which might react upon the reputation of the man whom above all others I revere…”

Quite in contrast to the descriptions in terms of "cold machine" Holmes usually gathers, hm? ;) I like the idea of him reading Watson's descriptions, especially as you use it here, as an extraordinary way of communication between the two.

I think getting the message across to Holmes, particularly when he's in one of his black moods, requires all the ingenuity and wit Watson can muster. Plus, I suspect he's writing the truth, at least in this instance.
