BOSC -- The Boscombe Valley Mystery

 

He was used to the authority of his position: Inspector Lestrade of Scotland Yard. Being in essence a hired consultant – a consulting detective, of all the ironies – did not suit him at all.

And the look on Mr. Holmes’ face, when bidding him goodbye – Dr. Watson’s –

Lestrade swallowed his pride, followed his instincts, and hailed a cab to Holmes’ hotel.

Oh, nice. I do love a bit of Lestrade. (This story has another truly flattering description of him - Watson really doesn't pull his punches, does he?)

Thank you! More Lestrade is always a good thing, I think.

But yes, Watson does have another doozy of a description of him in this story. And then Lestrade essentially drops out of the story entirely two-thirds of the way through. It's a head-scratcher.

It is interesting that Lestrade is doing side work in this story. If Sherlock Holmes can be a consultant, why can't a real detective, right?

Thank you! It is a puzzle, Lestrade working as a consulting detective in this story. I think it's the only canon story that has him doing so...curiouser and curiouser. I wonder why?

That would be an interesting thing to explore. Perhaps Lestrade gets into it to prove he can do it too, or perhaps he badly needs the money for some mysterious reason. Lots of interesting places this could go...
