Author's Notes: Ah, finally a nice break from all the angst. I love our gentlemen in SPEC. Holmes might be afraid, but what he's not is alone.


I mentioned the danger, but he didn't flinch.

"Can I be of assistance?"

All I could manage was honesty. "Your presence might be invaluable."

"Then I shall certainly come," he said, nodding definitively, steel in his voice.

His bravery, open loyalty, his true friendship left me without adequate vocabulary.

"It is... very kind of you," I stammered.

Watson only smiled.

Oh, that's lovely! Obviously Holmes knew enough to tell Watson to bring his gun to Stoke Moran, but to see him really realize, here, how brave and true Watson is - it's a delicious glimpse at how their partnership is growing and strengthening through these early stories. Beautifully done.

This is a nice glimpse into Holmes appreciating what his partner has to offer. It's always good to know when you've found somebody to follow you into battle... Really, never realized how much Sherlock needed a former Army man.
