Canon Story: The Resident Patient
Rated G, no warnings.

Looking back on my notes of the Brook Street Mystery with the eyes of a much better-informed man, I can see now the clues to which Holmes was referring. I had wondered at him, for the traces of ash were so slight and the footsteps so faint, that he must have looked long and hard to know their origins.

Seems that he can better appreciate the genius and hard work his friend has put into his trade as consulting detective. Very considerate of Watson :-)

I like the idea here of Watson looking back on a time early in his partnership with Holmes. He can remember how amazed he was at what then seemed to be nearly impossible feats.

He learns later on that they're only extremely difficult. :)

That's a very interesting perspective, good idea! I like how it's still a difficult deduction on Holmes's part - the traces of ash being very slight.

Lovely, thank you.

An interesting thought. Watson looking back on the early cases and regarding things slightly differently.
