A/N: There were a lot of unanswered questions and loose ends in this canon for me.

“Holmes, do you really believe the wife killed Lucus? The valet, Mitton might not have walked home as he claims. Or Mrs. Pringle, the housekeeper may not be a heavy sleeper. She had opportunity. Even Lady Hope could have murdered the man and blamed Mme. Fournaye knowing she cannot tell otherwise.”

There's a lot left to imagination in this one, aye? It makes me think that Holmes tried everything to quiet down the affair in context of its political outreach, instead of going down the pit.

Maybe. Or possibly we just never get the whole story out of Watson? Then again, maybe Watson was never privy to Holmes' full involvement in the case.

That's the question. We've often had cases which showed that Watson can't have been that truthful to what he knew, but would Holmes make an exception when secrecy decides about the fate of a nation, if not a continent?

What's more, Watson admits he may be vague from the outset. He's writing from retirement, and that admits another level of indulgence. Interesting, indeed...

Thanks! Had always thought all of ACD's cases were a bit neater and tied up but realizing that is not always so as I read through them again this time :-)
