I waited as long as I was able, making up reasons for Isa's late return, each more implausible than the last. I tried to stay busy, but could not. I paced, frantic, glancing out of the window, jumping at small sounds.

Soon, I could bear it no longer. Darling Mary would know what to do. She always did, after all.

Great to see a piece from this point of view. I wonder how things fared for the couple after Watson's "rescue"?

In a way, this makes Mary responsible for her husband heading away on a case:-)

This is a very nice point to illustrate. I think this trait of his wife's must have been treated by Watson with equal parts fondness and exasperation.

I'm glad you gave Kate Whitney a voice here. She deserves so much better. At least she has a quality friend in Mary. It's beautiful to have a warm all-woman moment in Sherlock Holmes canon.
