Exotic epidemics feel far away for us Londoners. Most wouldn’t care about indigenous people, weakened from exploit on plantations, and I won’t deny that I was amongst the ignorant.
Yet Mercy prevails where she is least expected. Not just did her Angels pocket what riches panicking colonists had left behind, a good share was used to established the tribes’ freedom.

I've based this thought on concepts of organised crime, mostly mafia and yakuza. Both are known to, in their origins at least, also be of social benefit to their communities. Of course this helped their dark sides, but it was a clever way of actually doing good to people where official systems failed. For example, the yakuza donated immense sums of money when the fatal tsunami hit last year, but they asked to stay anonymous because they knew people wouldn't want to accept donations from criminals. This is so full of points at which judgement is made, good and evil, charity and crime - it's a fascinating and cruel and puzzling aspect of our world.

Well, Mercy's also a bit of a feminist-turned-criminal. She (thinks that she) liberates women, in her own ways, so if someone recognises suppression, it's her.

This is a fascinating angle to go with. That everyone is a hero in their own mind, "helping" in their own way that they see fit, even if society does not. Very interesting indeed!
