Author's Notes: I actually wrote two this week!

“I am going out now.”

Watson throws me a look tinged darkly with worry. Immediately, I raise my hands to reassure him.

“It is only a reconnaissance. I will do nothing serious without my trusted comrade and biographer at my elbow.”

He sighs and visibly relaxes. My good Watson, always concerned, always caring. He is far more than I deserve.

“I play the game for the game’s own sake.”

Mycroft never believes me when I tell him that. He has always favored honors and accolades, but such frivolities are meaningless to me. Only clues matter; only the answers are real. My rewards come in the form of intellectual self-satisfaction and not in the empty gestures of titles or tie pins.

Warnings: none, I think. Apologies, always. Warnings, no.

The first time they arrived together, I thought it expediency. The second time, I was too distracted by the details of the case. But the third time, in the wait in the dark, watching Lestrade fidget and my brother check his watch, it occurred to me: Mycroft never shared cabs. I raised one eyebrow at brother mine and smiled quietly.

Author's Notes: This is for my pals at Fyeahmystrade who kindly pointed out the basis for Mystrade was in this story, which made me just SQUEE. Hee hee hee... It's Canon!

Character(s): Doctor John Watson, Sherlock Holmes, Inspector Lestrade
Summary: Lestrade reflects on his work.
Warnings:  Ties in tangentially with several of my fics, including the 60 for 60 I did last week, Second Thoughts, as well as The Boscombe Valley Omission, and tangentially (if you read between the lines), the end of Transposition. You don't *have* to read any of those to read this.
Word Count: 60
Author's Notes:  60 words of my own inspired by one of the canon stories.
Disclaimer: I don't own them.

BRUC -- The Adventure of the Bruce-Partington Plans

Being an Inspector at Scotland Yard didn’t pay much. Lots of officers did some private work. Lestrade had tried it once, but it hadn’t suited him.

Agreeing to outside work for Whitehall – well, Mycroft Holmes? Lestrade had hesitated mightily before accepting, but the elder Holmes proved less sharp-edged than his brother, softer in all ways.

Lestrade never regretted his decision.

Author's Notes: Yes, okay, it's another drabble rather than 60 words. It just would not be shortened.

When I conceived the plan, I knew that persuading Watson would be the trickiest part. After the Milverton incident, he had sworn never to engage in house-breaking again, and although that had been several years ago, I suspected that he would hold firm to that.

When he agreed, I looked at his face and saw that it was not just his patriotism that had swayed him, but also his inability to let me go into harm's way alone. A powerful emotion passed through me, one that only Watson has ever inspired, and which I have never known how to express.

Author's Notes: Hopefully not too late.  I had to reconcile Mary with the love that dare not speak its name.

I loved my wife. Never doubt that. I loved her from the first moment I saw her. But I could see the confusion in her eyes every time I leapt up to be at his side. My sorrow is that I never dared explain that I loved him too, and that for me, the two loves were not entirely incompatible.
