Reader, I married him. Then I discovered that a rich and ruthless man of business will say and do whatever is needed to gain a contract. Once he has won, only the bare ink and paper of ownership concern him. The resource is his to enjoy, exploit, exhaust... and grow as tired of, in time, as any other fulfilled deal.

THOR -- The Problem of Thor Bridge

The depths of winter were always hardest on Holmes, but I had never seen him so badly off as this. Nothing I did seemed to help. Worse, I saw the previously-conquered longing for the needle grow in his depressed gaze.

Desperate, I turned to the written word, hoping the black-and-white phrases might reach him as my spoken words had not.

“…had I not feared to give the public a surfeit which might react upon the reputation of the man whom above all others I revere…”

“You are remarkably silent this evening, Watson.  I realise that my deductions indicated a slowing of my brain, but I expected some response from you.”

“Holmes, it was my revolver!”

“The Hampshire Constabulary will retrieve it, I have no doubt.”

“That is not the point.  My revolver is to protect us from danger not for you to experiment with.  Ever!”

Author's Note: The image just struck me as a play bow, and I couldn't resist it.

I kept a sprightly puppy as a boy that would lean his paws out into almost a bow when he was excited.

"Come play a game with me," he seemed to say, scrawny tail flapping.

Holmes made that same invitation reaching out for my knees in the train-car, his eyes just as brightly enthused even without a tail to wag.

During those weeks to follow the fossilised eggs, our new cook did not show signs of changing her reading material. As Watson, for reasons unknown to me, seemed quite fond of the woman, I took it upon myself to educate her by replacing every single romance in the household with post-mortem reports. Upon which we had to adjust to vegetarianism.
