"The motives of women are so inscrutable" -- Sherlock Holmes in The Second Stain

A woman may be clever: that does not make her behaviour logical. I attended Irene Adler's wedding incognito; I deduced the location of the hidden panel at Briony Lodge. Admittedly, once she suspected her mistake, the woman thwarted me most effectively. But I still cannot understand how Irene Adler could love both Mr Godfrey Norton and the King of Bohemia.

Note: Several friends of mine have always reckoned that there's more to this case than meets the eye. I gave one possible solution to Irene Adler's behaviour in my ACD/BBC crossover story The Eternal Woman.

A/N: Inspired by Irene Norton, nee Adler’s letter. “I love and am loved by a better man than he.”

She was an extraordinary woman. A performer. Clever. Unconventional. Passionate in her profession and the best. Her heart was bitter and cold. Then Godfrey Norton entered her life.

~o~

He was a man of brilliant intellect. An actor. Genius. Eccentric. Obsessed by his trade and unsurpassed. His mind was a machine devoid of softer emotions. Then Doctor Watson entered his life…

The lady was lovely alright.  I could have stood and looked at her all day.  You could tell that my driver thought the same.  And she wasn’t just lovely to look at, she was kind too.  Even the scruffy geezer, the one she gave a sovereign to, found it as hard to take his eyes off her as we did.

A/N: Told from Jane Moriarty's perspective (prompt #2). Inspired by Irene dressing up as a man.

Norton’s departure to Australia had been arranged months ago, and I taking his place as dear Irene’s lover prove easier than we had imagined. Irene was a professional, but I had to bite my tongue hard that day in church. I am very sure Holmes noticed the scent of theatre make-up that surrounded the ‘groom’, and the situation’s wonderful surrealism.

Contrary to what Holmes had been told, the picture was not of myself with the King, but another.  The house in Inner Temple had seen many pretty young men enter and leave and not a few indiscrete liaisons.  Our wedding was a smoke screen; the police had grown too interested in Norton’s activities.  The scandal would be averted for now.
