Author's Note: I was thinking why Holmes never seemed to write his promised textbook on detection, and the timing of when he was supposed to write it in retirement gave me my answer. I like to think at the end of this one, he uses another piece of modern technology: the telephone.
The machine buzzes to life, a hive of modern electric technology. Keys are pressed; words appear.
THE SCIENCE AND ART OF DETECTION
BY SHERLOCK HOLMES
Beneath, a vast expanse of white paper stretches unbroken. The journeyman author thirsts for advice, but consultation with the professional has not occurred in years.
Holmes switches off the typewriter. In Sussex, all is silence.
