Mr Holmes told us many things in the years that he tended us.  How much he missed the good doctor’s presence and how he regretted the distance they were apart.  His sorrow that he was unable to provide the companionship that the doctor had with the inspector.  His delight at the infrequent visits when the doctor was able to come.

You were the stunt-dog for “The Lion’s Mane”?

That’s right. Originally I was booked for three scenes. Rehearsed being thrown through plate-glass eight times before Sir Arthur decided it should happen offstage. And a flashback with me wrestling the jellyfish was apparently “too implausible”.

But the third scene remained?

Indeed. Though Holmes did describe my corpse as a little stiff.

“You’re getting slow in your old age,” Watson called as he let himself into the cottage. “And far less subtle.”

Dropping the copy of The Strand on the side table he quickly hung up his coat and went straight to the living room to see the effect of his surprise mid-week visit.

There he found the table set for two.

Watson’s face fell as he skimmed over the manuscript Jane handed him.
“I cannot possibly deliver this, it is atrocious!”
“Then you should not have accepted Mr Mycroft’s secret mission and written it yourself, relieving my very busy department of the tediousness. If it’s of any consolation, Mr Mycroft reacted appropriately to the salt I have spiced his tea with.”

“The drug has been secured?” Mycroft Holmes asked. Jane snapped to attention.
“Secured and stored as you ordered, Sir.”
“Very good. It must never encounter human presence again.”
Jane nodded. By this time, the next test results of their improved formula should have been delivered. What the government did not know would not disturb the peaceful sleep of its citizens.

The letter read:
“Dear friend,
matters of great import have arisen and require your immediate return to the capital. A hansom will await you at ____ station. Tell the driver the code your brother will communicate to you.
– Jane”
He looked up. Mycroft said:
“The code is Angel.”
