The English weather being what it is, by the time I made it to Southsea the heat had gone and we were subjected to frequent downpours.  Nevertheless there were benefits.  Lestrade and I spent many a pleasant hour in the bandstand and the local hostelries without anyone giving us a second glance, thinking us merely two friends avoiding the rain.

This week we’re having a look at The Adventure of the Cardboard Box. As usual I have typed up a few thoughts to get the discussion going.

A/N: A depleted bank account had caused me to postpone my holiday…

Bognor

Let me see:

Postponing your holiday left you despondent.

You studied an old picture postcard of Bognor—obviously considering a half-day excursion instead.

You smiled across at me. I informed you I would not be found dead in Bognor.

Your expression suggested you were annoyed…

And now you’ve emptied a jug over my head, which does rather confirm my theory.

A/N: The word ‘Croydon’ has been originally spelled with an ‘i,’ which has been changed to ‘y.’

Croydon

It’s not i, it’s y. It’s not i, it’s y.

It’s not i, it’s not—not I. It was you. It was your fault.

Not i, not i… Oh God, her eyes! Her eyes looking at him.

No. Not i, not i. It’s y. y.

Why.
It had to be done.

Miss S. Cushing,
Cross Street,
Croiydon.

There.
It’s done.

Reward

Following the return of the Countess of Morecar's carbuncle, once Patterson had departed with his thousand pounds, I asked Holmes what he intended to do with his share of the reward.

He would not say though, only put me off with a joking remark about buying a cottage in the country where someday he could retire and keep bees.

A Different View

Holmes crawled about on the muddy ground, searching for clues to the identity of the elder McCarthy's killer. In his zeal, he flung himself flat, then knelt down with his nose almost touching the grass, heedless of the damage to his trouser-knees.

I found the view from where I stood behind him more engaging than any clue could be.
