This week we’re looking at The Adventure of Wisteria Lodge. As usual I’ve typed up a few thoughts to get the discussion started.

Discussion continues... )

Author's Notes: I find it recorded in my notebook that it was a bleak and windy day towards the end of March in the year 1892. A case in 1892 when Holmes was “dead”? “1892” may be what Watson reads in his notes but it surely can’t be what he wrote.

There can be only one explanation…

“Unhand him!” Holmes swiftly disarmed the assailant holding the blade to Watson’s throat.

Watson sighed.

“Do let Mr. Skinner finish my shave, Holmes.”

“But,” Holmes panted, “you left a scribbled note saying you’d been abducted!”

Watson glanced at the proffered paper.

“It says: ‘at barber’s’.”

“Heavens,” said Holmes. “Apparently even my powers of deduction cannot cope with a doctor’s handwriting.”

Author's Notes: Lord Harringby, The Dingle; Sir George Ffolliott, Oxshott Towers; Mr. Hynes Hynes, J. P., Purdey Place… “The other mansions belonged to prosaic and respectable people who live far aloof from romance…”

Mr. Hynes Hynes, J.P.
Defines fines to the ha’penny.
As he upholds the law,
Holmes sets him down as a bore.

A/N: For the younger members of the audience: “ha’penny” is a halfpenny and is pronounced “hayp-nee”. And a JP is a Justice of the Peace. And “Hynes Hynes” is a ridiculous double-barrelled upper class surname. (I think that covers everything… ^^)

I am very sorry to have to report to you that the mulatto cook is now dead.  It would appear that, denied the opportunity to continue with his customary practices, he gave up on life.  He refused all forms of subsistence and seemed to shrink before our eyes.  His death, too, I shall lay at the door of Don Murillo.

Inspector Baynes
Went to great pains
To capture the cook
But still he was unable to bring the real villain to book
