This week we’re having a look at The Sussex Vampire. As always, I’ve typed up a few thoughts to get the discussion started.

Author's Notes: …though he docketed any fresh information very quietly and accurately in his brain, he seldom made any acknowledgment to the giver.

Easter

“Violets!” beamed Mrs. Hudson. “How did you guess my favourites?”

Holmes smiled. “I have my methods.”

“’Methods’? I told you,” spluttered Watson later.

“Tsk,” said Holmes. “Does it matter how our lessons come to us?”

Christmas

“Buying me unmentionables! Mr. Holmes, it’s… unseemly!”

“But Dr. Watson said..!”

“Well,” said Watson, safely upstairs. “It appears Holmes has learnt a lesson.”

Warnings: Hypothetical baby peril
Author's Notes: Our client, Mr. Robert Ferguson, of Ferguson and Muirhead, tea brokers, of Mincing Lane, has made some inquiry from us in a communication of even date concerning vampires.

Mr. Muirhead:
Ferguson appears in your stead.
Would Doyle have tried to engulf
Your child with a werewolf?

Warning:
Author's Notes: he is fifteen, I understand, and probably very developed in mind, since his body has been circumscribed in action….He rushed forward and threw his arms round his neck with the abandon of a loving girl.

Holmes watched his own reflection in the window.  He rarely pitied anyone, but Jacky worried him.

A year at sea could cure him. Perhaps the boy would learn how a lad should act. Perhaps he wouldn’t return at all. Such things happened.  The boy wasn’t strong, and his manner was odd enough to attract problems. Hopefully, he wouldn’t kill anyone.

It may well be that the world was not ready for the giant rat of Sumatra, however ...

It was unfortunate Mrs Hudson was sure she had glimpsed a rat in Holmes’ room.  He tried to convince her she was mistaken, but to no avail.  I am not entirely certain why it became my responsibility to smuggle out the ferret - borrowed for a case - but luckily I was successful, making my escape when she went for her broom.

Matilda Briggs
Did not carry pigs
But one giant rat
And truly ‘tis better that the less is said about that
