This week we’re having a look at Silver Blaze. I’ve typed up a few thoughts to get the discussion going—please leave your own ideas in the comments!

Welcome once again to my poetry page!

I hope each week you will read Dr. Watson’s delightful narrative and then be inspired to write a poem related to it in some way. All forms of poetry are permitted, and further down the page there is a selection you might like to consider using over the coming weeks.

This week my featured form is doggerel.

Shadow Poetry gives the following definition:

Crudely written poetry which lacks artistry in form or meaning. Trivial, poorly written verse that is sometimes intentionally, or unintentionally humorous.

The name made me think of “the curious incident of the dog in the night-time.” And also Mr. Holmes had set fire to the curtains again, so I was not feeling up to anything complicated.

Example Poem )

As always, this is simply something to consider for the future. Any form of poetry is welcome this week—and every week! Here are a few suggestions for you:

221B verselet, abecedarian poetry, acrostic poetry, cinquain, circular poetry, clerihew, concrete poetry, diamante, doggerel, epigram, epulaeryu, fable, haiku, limerick, palindrome poetry, riddle, sedoka, sestina, sonnet, tanka, terza rima, tongue twister poetry, triolet, tyburn, villanelle

Please leave all your poems inspired by Silver Blaze in the comments on this post. I look forward to seeing them!

Warm regards,

Mrs. Hudson

Title: Severe Carpeting
Author: [livejournal.com profile] scfrankles
Rating: G
Author's Notes: ...so close together that a carpet could have covered them… ...you know that men do not carry other people's bills about in their pockets. We have most of us quite enough to do to settle our own.

“How could you spend all that money?” whispered Watson. “And with the rent due!”

“I needed a disguise,” muttered Holmes.

“But a dress of pure silk?!”

Holmes scowled. “You bought that field-glass!” He froze. “Hush! She’s coming..!”

“Heavens,” said Mrs. Hudson. “They’re out again. Still, I can get some cleaning done. Start by giving this lumpy rug a good beating…”

Title: Sports Pages - The Wessex Cup (as featured in the Marylebone Illustrated)
Author:thesmallhobbit
Rating: G

There was another convincing win for the favourite, Silver Blaze, on Tuesday in the Wessex Cup.  Despite not showing his well known white forehead, he triumphed by over six lengths from his rival Desborough, with Iris coming in a disappointing third.  Silver Blaze is now expected to go to stud.  We look forward to watching his progeny in future years.

Summary: Every villain starts somewhere.
Author's Notes: This will make a wee bit more sense if you know anything about Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog

***

One blow in self-defense and I’d killed one of our two-legged masters. Exhilaration drove me to run my best – a winner earns the right to stud.

The dog’s silent assistance made him my first henchman. He lolled his tongue in agreement at my invitation.

I would sire a dynasty of Bad Horses. We would be feared as Thoroughbreds of Crime!
