“I understand you more these days, Holmes.”

A droll smile. “Really, Doctor?”

“Your former scorn for ‘the softer emotions.’ Were my first experiences those of examining the aftermath of incidents like Thor Bridge, or creatures like Jonas Oldacre, I’d shun romantic love as poison too.”

He caressed the hand I’d laid on his cheek. “Fortunately, I have an excellent teacher.”

Story: The Problem of Thor Bridge

Rating: Teen for mention of drug use

Summary: The first sixty words of an unfinished poem from the late Mrs. Gibson’s perspective

Dear Sir,

Don’t blame my fate on rivulets beneath my skin.

My blood was no warmer than any army officer’s,

twice-baked by Indian and Afghani suns.

Don’t blame the earth’s slant beneath my cradle.

For if we blame birthplace and forbearers for our transgressions,

we might charge

Vernet

for the brushstrokes of a syringe on the canvas of an arm.

Welcome once again to my poetry page!

I hope each week you will read Dr. Watson’s delightful narrative and then be inspired to write a poem related to it in some way. All forms of poetry are permitted, and further down the page there is a selection you might like to consider using over the coming weeks.

This week my featured form is the triangular triplet.

Author's Notes: “...ruin a defenceless girl who was under your roof.” This is such a passionate response from Holmes. Could there be a personal aspect to it?

“Mycroft just remembers her. She left soon after I was born.”

I nodded sympathetically—stunned, but moved that the Holmeses took in a stranger’s child and⸺

I froze.

The brothers had the same ‘art in the blood’.

Holmes waved carelessly. “It’s fortunate my father kept me. Life as the son of an unmarried governess… Well.”

“Holmes…”

“All in the past.”

A/N: To be honest, even I don’t really believe this actually happened but it seemed like an interesting “what if..?”

Should any of our readers wish to spend the occasional evening reading items of fiction, we would recommend The New Review, which features stories by such excellent authors as Henry James and H G Wells.  These are of a far higher standard than the romances by amongst others Caroline Emily Cameron which are to be found in the Family Herald.
