I wrote everything down faithfully, and hid my smile at the California woman’s melodramatic words: I fainted dead away… …sick for months… …thought it was his ghost at first…

…And remembered every word with crystal clarity even as I came to in my office, with the taste of brandy on my lips and a dead man’s eyes gazing at me.

Welcome once again to my poetry page!

I hope each week you will read Dr. Watson’s delightful narrative and then go on to write a poem related to it in some way. All forms of poetry are permitted, and further down the page there is a selection you might like to consider using over the coming weeks.

And here, courtesy of my housemaid Rachel, is this week’s suggested poem to read—a suggestion inspired by the themes and subjects in this week's story. Hopefully you will enjoy the poem, and perhaps it may give you some ideas for a poem of your own or allow you to look at Dr. Watson's story in a new way.

Unfortunate Coincidence

by Dorothy Parker

Thank you so much to Rachel. And here is my suggested form to revisit this week: tongue twister poetry. (The link takes you back to a previous poetry page.)

But you do not have to use that form. Any form of poetry is welcome this week—and every week! Here are a few suggestions for you:

Title: Beneath One’s Station
Author: [livejournal.com profile] scfrankles
Rating: G
Author's Notes: As the New Annotated Sherlock Holmes mentions, ‘Lord St. Simon’ is actually incorrect for the younger son of a Duke. He’s either Lord Robert St. Simon or Lord Robert.

“And so you see, father,” said Lord Robert. “She may not be of our station but the dowry will be… sufficient.”

His father nodded. “I suppose I must grant my consent then.”

The Duke sighed as Robert left. The marriage was necessary but still, he could not wholeheartedly approve…

That poor girl. Stuck with his pompous fool of a son.

Author: thesmallhobbit

Our guests last night did not stay for very long after taking supper with us, which meant the bottles which had been delivered were not fully consumed.  Holmes said it would be a shame to let them go to waste now they were opened and I heartily agreed with him.  I wonder if he too has a headache this morning.
