“Oh, miss, must I?” Tears in the slavey’s eyes.

“Very much so, Mary Jane.” Mrs. Watson smiled at the girl. “I’ll give you notice, of course, but you’ll go with an excellent reference straight to my friend Mrs. Pendleton. Now scrape.”

She’d see what kind of mud those slits picked up, and know when John abandoned her for Mr. Holmes.

Title: A Trifle More
Rating: Teen (for setting)
Summary: Holmes to Mary.
Author's Note: Last 60 words of my poly Holmes/Mary/Watson fic, A Trifle More, which is the full-length version of the one published for the Holmes_Minor September prompt. Probably cheating, I know.

Sleep was near, like a client oscillating on the pavement.
“I have neither the character nor society’s permission to tend to him as you do. And he is so conspicuously loved; his person, wardrobe, everything about him says so.”
“I act as any wife.”
“Indeed. I should have thought a little more.” I heard him smile. “Just a trifle more.”

Welcome once again to my poetry page!

I hope each week you will read Dr. Watson’s delightful narrative and then go on to write a poem related to it in some way. All forms of poetry are permitted, and further down the page there is a selection you might like to consider using over the coming weeks.

And here, courtesy of my housemaid Rachel, is this week’s suggested poem to read—a suggestion inspired by the themes and subjects in this week's story. Hopefully you will enjoy the poem, and perhaps it may give you some ideas for a poem of your own or allow you to look at Dr. Watson's story in a new way.

Indian Summer

by Dorothy Parker

My grateful thanks to Rachel for her excellent choice of poem. And here is my suggested form to revisit this week: the Fib. (The link takes you back to a previous poetry page.)

Title: Wedding Ring
Author: [livejournal.com profile] scfrankles
Rating: G
Author's Notes: ‘Now, I know that there are seventeen steps, because I have both seen and observed.’ 'Drive like the devil,' he shouted, 'first to Gross & Hankey's in Regent Street, and then to the Church of St. Monica in the Edgware Road. Half a guinea if you do it in twenty minutes!'

Irene shook her head.

“In and out of that jeweller’s in minutes, but you chose a ring of the correct size and completely to my taste. Your powers of observation must equal those of Sherlock Holmes himself!”

“Really?” said Norton.

Irene burst into laughter, and Norton grinned. “I’ll buy you another.”

“No need...”

His wife smiled.

“I love this one.”

Despite my complete happiness with Mary as my wife I sometimes long for Mrs Hudson’s control of her household servants.  She would not have tolerated Mary Jane’s slapdash ways as long as we have.  On the bright side, I am now able to have the occasional tobacco burn or ink on my cuffs without feeling I need to apologise profusely.
