“Nice try, Holmes!” Watson stomped upstairs at full volume. “Even got the papers in on it – ‘murderous attack,’ my foot!” He glared at the bandaged man. “Rouge and eye-shadow for blood and bruises? That’ll fool me again, eh?”

A croak. “You need to study–“

“I need dinner. Remove that disguise and you can join me.” Watson pivoted and left.

“Built by a South African gold king?” I mused.
I gave the turrets one last glance, then  followed the butler inside, thinking to myself that an imposing, nightmare of a house obtained as a result of the ruthless extraction of something precious by a unwanted, unwelcome, and violent outside party might hold great appeal for a villain like Baron Gruner.

Welcome once again to my poetry page!

I hope each week you will read Dr. Watson’s delightful narrative and then go on to write a poem related to it in some way. All forms of poetry are permitted, and further down the page there is a selection you might like to consider using over the coming weeks.

And here, courtesy of my housemaid Rachel, is this week’s suggested poem to read—a suggestion inspired by the themes and subjects in this week's story. Hopefully you will enjoy the poem, and perhaps it may give you some ideas for a poem of your own or allow you to look at Dr. Watson's story in a new way.

Kintsugi

By Nikita Gill

Note from Rachel: Kintsugi is a style practiced in Japanese pottery, wherein broken pieces are repaired with gold that both seals and highlights the cracks. It is a way of acknowledging that history, scars, and survival are beautiful and worth celebrating. I hope that Miss Winter has someone in her life who helps her believe in the message of this poem.

Thank you so much to Rachel. And here is also a new poetry form to try: rimas dissolutas.

Definition and Example )

But you do not have to use this form. Any form of poetry is welcome this week—and every week! Here are a few suggestions for you:

“On your release, I’ll establish you in your own business.”

Kitty scoffed. “I don’t want charity!”

“It’s what I owe you.”

Violet produced the diary.

“For this. Not— That changed nothing. He’s still manipulating the naive.”

She gripped the book.

“But… I know my duty.”

Kitty laughed softly. “You’re going to save all his future victims?”

Violet nodded firmly.

“Yes.”

Our rooms in Queen Anne Street are slightly smaller than those in Baker Street, but what is lacking in size is more than compensated for by the presence of my companion.  In addition I am not at the beck and call of a housebound Holmes.  Which reminds me, apparently Mrs Hudson’s hearing malady has returned.  I’ll check it - next week.
