Mercy’s meagre hands trembled when she put down the report about Holmes’s latest solved case. “Of course they would blame a woman to be responsible for a man’s actions – his drinking, two murders, and the mutilation of corpses. This is the nineteenth century-”
She coughed, waving away the maid and her lunch tray. No time for that. No time whatsoever.

This is excellent. You've done such a great job here highlighting the incredible injustice women faced in that time. What's sad is that victim blaming is so widespread even today.

I think the point that it isn't much different today is what made me so angry. However, fiction plays a role in changing thinking much more than non-fiction does, statistically, so I guess we have a tool in our hands there.
