BERY – Bad Company

I knew who Holder’s client must be. This act was another blemish on a character that already did not stand the test of close scrutiny. My client complained of his son’s waywardness, yet from his report Arthur had made multiple attempts to amend himself. Holder had no idea that far worse fruit had fallen from much nobler trees than his.

True that. I guess that very honest souls can't stand with even small blemishes on their conciousness while the "far worse fruit" (great words!) wouldn't even notice anything wrong with their worries.

The contrast between Holder's attitude towards his client (who was doing a very bad thing) and his son (who had done bad things, but nothing as reportedly bad as this) was interesting.

Using the nation's treasure as collateral for an enormous personal loan is absolutely outlandish. You can only imagine what other idiocy this rotten apple from a much nobler tree must have gotten into to need so much money overnight.

And given some of the historical misdeeds of the high aristocracy of the time (including some of Victoria's own children), you can imagine some pretty bad things, yes.
