Author's Note: Reading these stories in a chronological order has been fascinating. There is a real sense of time passing and things changing. Just like real life.


Age was gaining on us, and ever we ran forward to stay ahead of the sunset. But after losing a fight he'd earlier have won, Holmes could no longer deny the truth.

His bruises healed. His cuts mended. His muscle stiffness eventually eased. His headaches did not.

"You cannot continue this forever."

For the first time, he did not argue.

Completely agree with you on the chronological thing. They just age before your eyes, it's sometimes wonderful and sometimes tragic.

It is sad, but at least we know Holmes has a rewarding retirement ahead of him. We all can only hope we do half as well in our elder years.

I hate thinking about Holmes and Watson getting older - in my head they're eternally somewhere vaguely in early middle-age. But I suppose it would have been ridiculous for ACD to keep them at the same age over all those years.

You've struck the right note with that last line - Holmes by his nature is a man to acknowledge the evidence and then face up to reality. And as you've said, Holmes does have a rewarding retirement to come ^^
