"Stop! Godfrey, please!"
Jimmie called my name into the darkness, but I ran on. I could not let him catch me. Could not let him see me. And above all things, could not let him touch me.
The door latched. Somewhere outside, he was still calling for me, searching in the night, but I could hear nothing over my tears.

That suddenly brought it home to me - Godfrey at this point believes that he will have to live in seclusion for the rest of his life and will never be reunited with James, but he must also be thinking that he'll never touch anyone again. I'm glad he got his happy ending.
