Pip – John Openshaw, trusting in Holmes, is pushed to his death in the Thames.

Pip – Sherlock Holmes, shaken to the core, vows vengeance.

Pip – The Lone Star goes down in the Atlantic, James Calhoun never hears of Holmes.

Neat structure! And gets straight to the core of how this case is one of Holmes's failures -- he doesn't save his client, and he doesn't even avenge him.
