It was not man's justice that befell the murderers of young Openshaw. It was justice meted out by the sea, condemning both guilty and innocent.
Unfair, tragic? Yes, but no less unfair that the sins of the Colonel was visited upon his brother and nephew, no less tragic that Holmes did too little, too late.
Nature's justice—harsh, imperfect... inexorable.
